Dear Friends,

I want to expand from existing 2.0 setup to 5.0
Whats the best way to go forward. I dont want to have two sepearate 5.1 and 2.1 setup

Room Size:
8.2 m X 4.5 m (height 6m:ohyeah: This might sound rediculous but its true. )

Present setup:
TV: 42" 3D TV (Philips 42PFL7977/V7)
TV has inbuilt videocon DDB settop box but no dolby digital or DTS decoder and no optical out. Audio outout fed to amp through 3.5 line out.
Speaker: Modaunt Short Carnival 8 floorstanders
Amp: Norge 1000 Concerto Gold
DVD Player: Pioneer DV2011 with 5.1 analog output (Want to get rid of this as this doesnt have usb input and is the weakest link in the full chain,Sometimes doesnt read disk in first attempt, takes lot of time to change the track. Makes vibration sounds from inside while reading disks)

Listening Habits: 80% TV 10% movies 10% music

Hello,

An Entry Level AVR+ sourround and center speakers should be your focus.Add subwoofer if case the Budget permits .Since you have very good Speakers just try the same Brand also same model Modaunt Short for the rest of Speakers.Polk, JBL,Velodyne,MS,Whrafs could be in your list for subwoofer as well.

There are lot of choice out there for AVR From Denon,Pioneer,Onkyo ,Yamaha,Again budget is the only question to get an answer.
Try Audition the AVR along with MS speaker(i.e step in to the showroom, which has AVR and the MS speakers in short).

All the best for your purchase.

Since you have mentioned the issues with DVD,Plan for a Pioneer 170 which have rave reviews.

Because i want to use 10% of my time to the fullest, when watching a movie.
If sound engineer has taken so much trouble to design sound in 5.1 why miss that part, at least surround sound. If budget was not a constraint  i would have bought a mini theater :ohyeah:

I had also in mind, if i can go the virtual way viz a product like blue ray player with dolby virtual speaker which produced 5.1 with just two front speakers. but i could not find any such product. This would have also prevented the wire clutter and cost of speakers, though i know that this is a compromise to the real 5.1 sound which is far more better than any virtual technology, even if it is from dolby themselves .

Budget around 15K for center and surround. If i buy an AVR, does my amp become obsolete. Is there a way that i can power front 2 channels through my amp.
Source for movies: Obvious (Cannot be disclosed because of forum rules :o )
Not Blue ray.

For a 15K budget for center & surround, you can consider Micca speakers aval in amazon.in for a throw away price...

Yes your Norge would become obsolete & you can consider any used AVR for <10K which can handle DTS & Dolby...

So i guess you have all digital soft copy of the files then :ohyeah:

sound engg also has taken trouble to design 7.1, 9.1. 16.2, x.y setups....... but is it worth the investment, or does it make sense if most of the time will be used to watched TV???

Anyway I would suggest if you are investing for a 5.1 setup, invest a small amount to get TataSky HD+ as well (or similar DTH) so that your 80% viewing is atleast justified since with HD channels you will also get DD 5.1.

In my TV (philips 42 PFL7977) i have inbuilt settop box with HD and 3D channels. But since the TV doesnt have a dolby or DTS decoder, once i choose the audio stream as Dolby, TV stops producing any sound.
But I am not sure if the HDMI is ARC, so that i can get the audio out to any external digital signal processor. I asked Philips, but even they dont know whether their TV is having ARC or not.

I don't think Philips LED TV support HDMI-ARC function... Check the manual.. If it supports ARC function, it will be mentioned on the HDMI port itself....
