Hi Mates,

need a help !
Do TVs with USB port/HDMI inputs can play movies from External Hard disk (500GB) directly.
will SAMSUNG LCD TV SERIES 5 model no LA32B530 support it ?
Which type of media players with USB port can support it?
what are the options to play them directly/thru media player on TV?

Some TVs can detect NTFS formatted HDDs. However they have limited playback functions. It is better to buy a media player.

Thanks Biju.
but my doubt remains...whether any media player with USB port is compatible with Hard disk. I checked with the sales assistants on various shops but they haven't got a clue.

Theoretically it must be. As it is immaterial for the TV what is beyond the USB port. Some sets have inability to read NTFS partition. Even if the NTFS is read, some will read only the first partition. With FAT the maximum size of a partition is limited.

So the best method is to take your own external HDD to the shop and connect to the model selected.

Even if it is detected not all file types are readable. Panasonic and samsung read only a limited types. LG found to read most types. I had a surprise when the less popular Haeir read almost all of the formats on the USB I carried.

As said above, TVs can play only limited file formats. Also with such big HDDs full of data, it will take ages to load the list of files. Where as in a HD media player, you can connect external hdd to usb port, scan all contents and the player will create a database. You will get more functionality. All the latest media players can support external HDDs.

all the media players a made to play files via HDD through USB .. and that includes almost all the major formats..

samsung 5 series yes they can play all formats however not sure if they support HDD..

BLASTO .. need your inputs... he is the tv guy...

Same as DVD player and USB?? If u have a DVD of a movie, how would u use your USB device to play that in your TV?You need the DVD player with the DVD drive right(unless you rip the DVD to a single file using a PC so that it can be copied to a USB)?

Also, a Bluray player will have almost definitely :D :D much better processing than what the TV can provide. It will also have provisions for connecting to an AVR for bitstreaming lossless audio formats, where I am not sure this is possible if the movie is played back using USB(ARC and all might make this possible, will have ot ask the gurus regarding this).

Any device can play from HDD if the USB port supports NTFS.The File Format it can play will depend upon the codecs supported by your device.
