I have a Mitashi 5.1 home theater system. I have my laptop connected to this through the aux input, which gives me a 2.1 audio output.
Is there any way I can get a 5.1 output from my laptop? There is a hdmi slot. Would this help? Are there adaptors to help me get this?

Connect a hdmi cable from the laptop to the hdmi input of of your Home Theater system.

go to your control panel and change the sound settings from internal speakers to 5.1 sound

You should get 5.1 sound when you play a source which is recorded in 5.1 mode

Buy a usb 5.1 sound card like the creative x-fi 5.1. There is one for sale in erodov or techenclave forum.

Which laptop?
Does it have an optical out?
If yes then you can use it

I doubt that the Mitashi will have HDMI in put as Baiju mentioned. Best to get the Creative X-fi 5.1.
