Hi,
The great Ghazal singer Iqbal Bano passed away? today:
- BBC NEWS | South Asia | Pakistani singer Iqbal Bano dies
Iqbal Bano was probably one of the best Ghazal singers ever.
She was considered a specialist in singing the poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Her rendition of "Ham Dekhenge" remains unparalleled in the world of music and social activism. Faiz had been jailed/exiled under the "Rawalpindi conspiracy". Her country had an unwritten ban on reciting poetry by Faiz. Under these conditions Iqbal Bano sang this revolutionary poetry to a 50,000 strong crowd cheering her. This live recording of "Ham Dekhenge" is the most powerful and provocative recital I have ever heard. This nazm presents the judgment day as defined in religions, as the day when the people would take over from tyrannical governments.

Thanks,
Sharad
Note: I might have said some of these things earlier, but I can't help repeating it again today.
