hello folks---i came upon this site while researching Harmon Kardon dealers in india .I am originally from calcutta and came to US about 25 years ago .I took a very early retirement two years ago to pursue other interests and am moving back to India permanently in about three months to lead a retired life.I was shocked to read about audio equipment prices in india and maybe the forum members can put pressure on dealers to reduce prices in India. This forum appears to be a great place to meet audio buffs to exchange information and make friends.

LOL hemant---that is a good one.I was an ardent fan of dallas cowboys under Tom Landry and lost interest in the "cocaine cowboys" under Jerry Jones!!!

nice to have met you. You're gonna have a crazy time adjusting to life after 25 yrs there when you get back though India's changed quite a bit - but not much in Calcutta (in case you are moving back to that city).

Finally - Shubho Naboborsho!!

Welcome Mudra & good luck on u relocating back to India.

AE u say not much has changed in Cal in the last 25 Yrs?????
Bombay has become a very different city in the last 25 yrs and am dreading what it will become in the next 10 Yrs!!!
Rgds

Hello friends----thanks for a warm welcome.Shubho Naboborsho to y'all.Guys---the key to a successful return to india move is to lower expectations and not compare the two vastly different countries.I know several people who have moved to India from the us and uk after a fairly long stay abroad.some were succesful and the key was close family relations and lowering their expectations. And importantly ,if you are well settled abroad, there is not much of a point to move back to india and live a chaotic life in one of the metros and work for an employer, fight the traffic and pollution .The successful returnees went back to india to lead a retired/semiretired life in smaller cities. As yet,i have not decided where i will be settling down.I loved my visit to sikkim.sikkim is a sharp contrast to much of india.During my school/college days ,we used to go to shillong and i have some happy memories of shillong. If you are not a native born of the state, you cannot buy property in shillong. So,that is ruled out.One of university mates moved back to gujarat after spending almost 20 years here.He lives in gandhinagar, gujarat and is a senior level executive with ONGC there. I had visited him during my last trip and was amazed as to how clean and green gandhinagar is A small capital of gujarat with a population of about 250000 only, with wide roads and green parks galore.the city is organised into about 30 sectors with each sector having a park.24/7 electricity and 24/7 water and most importantly ,no industries allowed in the city. The only negative i see is the summer heat .But with adequate airconditioning, one can stay indoors and do your own thing.Coorg and parts of karnataka are also nice but the problem is loadshedding and poor infrastrure.Nagercoil in tamilnad is quite a pleasant place, but the problem is language.Bengal has it's own set of problems, especially darjeeling and kurseong.Himachal Pradesh and Uttarkhand place severe restrictions on non residents of the states when it comes to buying property.Anyway,I will look around and check out a few places in india where i may be comfortable in settling down.Calcutta is a great place but over the years,it has changed character,is heavily polluted and with chaotic traffic.Although ,the street food and the sweets (Nakur) makes my mouth water .Anyway, i am coming to india quite prepared with over 1000 books ,approx. 2500 music cds and about 500 of lectures on differnt subjects by some great profs and my favorite documentaries.I havent decided what to do with some 300 albums which i had collected in the late eighties.More to come later and as always,i will appreciate your thoughts/opinions.

mudra99, Congrats on the decision to move back :)

If the CD's are causing you any trouble, they are welcome at my home where they will be safe from the heat ;) Anytime buddy!! Music has a place in my heart AND my home anytime!

You are welcome to visit as well!
(provided you bring all the CDs!) LOL :p

In Himachal Pradesh, laws are relaxed now, for example in shimla a non himachal can buy property but not land, which is possibile in muncipal limits etc. There is a very good project right now in shimla.

It is a great place to live, i would consider it in a year or two, in-fact i have done enough survey.
