Guys, my company has an urgent requirement to develop an IOS app for a promo that is scheduled soon. I have been a C programmer (mostly Unix systems programming) for the last 23 years and I took this up as an challenge and purchased a mac-mini 3 days back. I have setup Xcode and even managed to write two apps using a tutorial. However I am only able to run the build on the simulator. If I select "Build and Archive" to generate an .ipa file, it gives error which points to generating some certificate, etc. From what I can understand from reading on the web is that I need to enroll in Apple's developer program, pay some $99 to a great departed soul to be able to submit app to apple store, or generate an ad-hoc app. Is this true? Any help to throw light on my ignorance will be highly appreciated. Do you think it will be an impossible task for me (given the fact that I have only done unix systems programming till now).

My app is very simple. The first screen has an image with "Start the Tour" button. On clicking "Start the Tour" button, it should take you to the second screen where the customer can enter Name, Email address and Postal address in US. On clicking a "Submit" button, the app should send an email to a pre-determined email address. That is the app.

Alternatively is there any app developer out here who can develop the app for me. I will pay for the app development.

You are on track. That's how it works, you can build stuff in x-code but to deploy it to devices etc you'll need a apple dev account. You can publish unlimited apps to the store in an year. Its 99$ per year btw.

I don't think it's impossible. The learning curve was a little when I started too, I had to get our apps soon so I gave in and took help of my better half, who is an app developer.

If its a one-off app I think you are better off getting it built by someone (We can meet and talk about it). If you are planning to build more apps I'd suggest stick to the path, its only quirky the first or second time. I'd be happy to help in both the cases. :)

Hey Sarang, thanks for the offer and I appreciate the help. It is a long time since we met. I will call you tomm to discuss this. As I said, I will be able to fund the development. It is a one-off app and long term I should be able to learn it.
