My son in 2nd year college has a Ipod Touch, which is lying unused due to breaking of the previous foldable headphone from Senheiser.

He prefers a headphone with leather ear cushion, so that the cushion does not get spoiled due to sweats.

What should be the minimum budget to get a decent audiophile headphone with leather ear cushion. He likes good midrange and high. Also, it should have tight bass, not boomy or heavy.

I have thought about a Orthoheadphone (vintage Yamaha) costing below 10k for him, but I am discouraged by Gurubhai as it will require high output of 2-3 watt, which an Ipod touch will not be able to provide.

Please suggest headphones suitable for Ipod Touch (He will play ALAC files) within budget of around INR 15k.

Yeah vintage orthos & portable sources no go at all. However the YHE50 is quite sensitive & i was getting enjoyable sound with a nokia phone.
A modded Fostex T50 such as mad dogs should be good. Else, for 15k not much available in orthos. If you go the dynamics route be ready for sky high distorted bass & grainy treble.

I have few suggestions for you :

Creative Aurvana Live! $73 on amazon

Klipsch Image One

Grado iGrado

Koss Porta Pro

Sennheiser PX 100-II

AKG K451

Grado SR80i

These are all well acclaimed headphones.

Amitji, I was under the impression that you were looking for another Yamaha HP50 which certainly would have been a tough load for a portable. Like Oyster mentioned, there are some other orthos which should work reasonably well out of portable amps.Maybe we can setup a mini-meet so you can try for yourself to see if something meets your requirement.

Perfect Gurubhai. My son is coming home next week. I shall take him also to check in the mini-meet, as you proposed. I will tell you the probable day.
Thanks

I would also like to join in if that is not a problem. I can get my Sennheiser HD598.

I have senn-598.
You have to rise the volume of ipod to higher range to get a reasonably good sound.
It sounds very nice with Head phone amp.
Just my experiance.

If interested in in-ear passive noise cancel, I can recommend Shure SE 315 (or even older model SE 310) which has served me well for quite some time.

Can I be a part of that meet, please ?
Would love to hear orthos with EHHA !!

Sure. I 'll let you know the details once we decide on the time. BTW, it might interest you that we also have the beta22 up and running now apart from EHHA.;)

I have a few recommendations for U----
Headphones:
1) Sennheiser HD 598
2) Audio Technica ATH M50
3) V-Moda M80 / M100
4) Sennheiser HD 25-1-II

Headphone Amp.:
FiiO E11 or FiiO E12 or FiiO E17(with DAC)

I think a headphone amp is must to get best out of those cans.

Personally I am using Sennheiser HD439 + FiiO E11 + Cowon iAudio E2, A great combo.

I have picked up an ortho headphone with Yamaha YHE50 driver in a Sony casing from Gurubhai for my son for use with E-15 Sony Vaio Laptop. The casing is absolute basic and plastic, which will help my son to use in his hostel without any curiosity of others. I had some doubt about drivability without any headphone amp. After coming back home I asked my son to test it with his laptop. And he is more than satisfied - the sound level was decent.

The Yamaha YHE50 driver has impedance of 125 ohms and 97 db/mw sensitivity with frequency range of 20 - 20,000 Hz. The bass is deep and tight. But top end requires more shine and vocal mid range could have been slightly better. But the performance directly from Laptop without any headphone amp is more than expected.

If possible, better to get a headphone portable amp later. Gurubhai suggested Leckerton UHA-6S.MKII costing around 280$. Have to wait for few months to arrange the money. But I don't know, whether it would be possible to get the amp delivered to India!
