I'm a PC enthusiast that has recently built a HTPC but find that the HiFi world is seemingly against us PC people perhaps. Please help me through this minefield of HiFi so that I can get the most from my PC based World?

Welcome to HFV. Why do you think the Hi Fi world is against PC users? A well built PC can be a very good transport similar to a mac (which has its shortcomings as well in the AV world). But if one ends up using a PC for home or work use, games and also A/V then the performance will suffer.

Welcome to HFV mate.

Lots of PC users here. I use PC for both audio & video (HTPC). Prefer the PC it over both the PS3 and the WDTV I have.

With the right DAC most PCs compete very favorably with CDPs many times their budget. The Spatial Computer is in a league of its own.

Never understood this argument. In computers multitasking is the norm and not the exception. This argument might hold merit if it was a 1st generation 8-bit processor but not for the present generation multi-core, hyper-threaded processors. My i7 never crosses 6-7% of total CPU usage despite running Foobar, AV, firewall, tons of tabs on Firefox, an email client like Thunderbird, and I usually have PDFs and Word documents open too as I work on my system. It only breaks into a sweat when ripping and encoding Blu-Rays but even then I don't find Foobar skipping or missing a beat.

First of all, drill down your priorities. Do you need your HTPC for media playback only or do you need this for gaming or other graphics heavy applications as well?
