Hi friends,

I have a Harman Kardon AVR 260. I had picked this up around a couple of years ago. It was working fine but since 3-4 months I have a problem. The receiver does not turn on it says protect and shuts itself down. Initially upon turning it on twice or thrice it used to turn on. I initially suspected a short in the speaker wires and one weekend checked all the wires but there was no short and further the receiver displayed protect with no speakers connected. Now it really started acting up. It generally says protect and shuts itself up, sometimes after trying for around 20-25 times it turns on. Once it is on there is no problem but many a time I give up trying to turn it on.

Any suggestions on this.

Did you try after disconnecting the speaker wires from the receiver's binding posts?

Also vacuum clean the inside of the receiver.

The receiver says protect even if all the speakers are disconnected. I have not opened the receiver.

Looks like a short circuit in the board... Better to get it examined by the service center (or) any experienced person who deals with electronics..

Just noticed something I don't know whether it will help. If turned on for a considerable amount of time then it switched on and of quite easily. Something getting warmed up inside?????

I am really not sure if this helps:
i sometimes have same problem but in my car stereo. when it shows "protect" what i do is press the very very small rest button in the panel [can barely makeout]. it restarts and then works fine.
is there something similar ?

I have reset the receiver several times it erases all the settings but the problem continues. I am unable to understand why the receiver turns on after several attempts. Is this not surprising. I think the time has come to visit a experienced service person. My receive is directly connected to the power supply it maybe that the improper shutdown has created these kind of problems.

Well I have also accidentally found a way to turn the receiver on. I turn on the zone 2 in the receive's remote b by a slide switch and then using the remote I can turn it on at one go. Then I push the slider to zone1 and turn it on and the receiver turns on every time. Can anybody offer some advice on why this is so.

Update : I downloaded the newer firmware to the receiver using the RS 232 port. Well I could update the firmware but still the problem persists.

I am unable to understand that if the the receiver turns itself off how does it turn on when turned on in zone 2 mode. All the functions are working perfectly. It maybe some sort of malfunction of the protection circuit as I am unable to zero into any issues with the AVR

Expert views welcome

In addition to the above issue which still persists today i think the hdmi o/p has gone dead. Whenever the receiver is tuned on the TV detects a new i/p and on switching to that i/p there is no signal. However the component o/p works. The laptop and the blue ray player connected to the receiver (via hdmi) can decode the sound formats and play them but there is no video on the TV.

Any pointers where I can get this receiver services repaired. since this is a old receiver (2012) which supports the Dolby TruHD and DTS MasterHD with preouts and multichannel in so am interested in keeping this receiver if it can be repairable. I am based out of Gurgaon

Looks like the hdmi output card has gone kaput. A very common problem with AVRs. You should check with an alternate HDMI cable before you decide it is dead. Check for warranty too before attempting to open.

Well one issue was there and now since another issue has cropped up in the same receiver I thought to revive the old thread rather than creating a new one.

No Warranty is available since it is around 4 yrs old maybe its time for a newer receiver

Hi

If budget is an issue look at the For Sale by Owner section or Hi Fi Ads...you can get something at a reasonable rate and use it for a while.....AVRs / AMPs keep changing and we have some who like to upgrade....just like we do for cell phones.....

Ensure that you go for something where you can connect banana plugs for speaker wires and avoid shotting issues...

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
