Hello Friends,

I am looking for a TV > 42 inches & a home theater within 75K budget in Mumbai. I have some preferences for each but would be unaware of exact models:

TV
1) No 3D or Smart TV. Not a big fan of 3D & will be using a media player to connect & can skip these features altogether.
2) >42 inches HD LED TV preferably. I like Plasma TVs but since the TV will be used by the family more (Wife + Kid) the care that plasmas require will be difficult to put in place.
3) Preferably with >1 year warranty. I have heard lot of horror stories about the LED panel failure on the HiFi Vision forums.
4) For general viewing right from news, sports, movies to the typical saas bahu soaps.

Home Theater
1) I am not in favor of having speakers up the walls so 5.1 channel HTs with the satellite speakers will be out.
2) Looking to get the soundbars which provide a virtual surround sound experience. I can buy this from US & get it here. Is it a good idea???

Please let me know if there is a combination that can fit the above budget.

Thanks,
HiM

"Him" is a pronoun exclusively reserved for the Almighty. Why does the Almighty require a TV/HT when He can review the whole world? :) ;)

OK, just kidding. For you, 75K is a very tight budget. You can opt for Samsung 40EH6030 or Sony 40EX650. These will be around 65K.

A good soundbar will cost 12K or so. Junglee: soundbar

HiM is an abbreviation of my name....i am a spec of dust in this big bad world & yes my plasma TV will suffer burn ins :)

I had seen some Toshiba LED models which were >42" and also under 60K. Would this be good to go with???

Any suggestions for the soundbars??

Just did a similar configuration for my uncle.

1. Plasma do not need any special maintenance. So you can safely go with it. You can look at Panasonic plasma at 42 inch. They start at 47k with 3D (not a big diff in price between 3D and non 3d). They also come with 3 yrs warranty so that will take care of your headache. 42XT50 is a good model to look at.

2. I have researched a lot of sound bars and also own 2 of it. A soundbar depends a lot on the room. It works better in square or rectangle small room. Even in that it cannot really beat a proper 5.1 system. Even a normal 20k 5.1 system will beat a 60k soundbar anytime. A soundbar should be considered only if you are 100% sure you can't have 5 speakers. I would rather suggest looking at Philips or Sony HTiB bluray system that comes with wireless rear speakers, which will remove the problem of wiring the rear speakers. They will be in range of 20-30k and will fit your budget nicely.

Thanks Ram.

I will check out the Panasonic plasma model.

For the home theater, how do rear wireless speakers draw power. My new place has a living room of size 12ft. X 10 ft.

For the rear wireless: There is a separate rear amplifier. This amp needs to be connected to a power source. The rear speakers are connected to this amp. So practically, what you are avoiding is a wire running from HTIB to rear speakers. Instead the wire runs at the rear between the two speakers.

See this link to see how it will look:

Also, you can read page 22 to understand in detail:

Thanks Ram, Thanks Viper,

I think Toshiba LED TV + a Sony HTiB should work well within the budget.

Any alerts for the above combination??

Hi Ram,

Just saw an update from you on the other thread for Philips Soundbar that you purchased.

Is it a good one for a living room of 12X10 feet size & to go with a 46" Toshiba LED.

Thanks

I agree with just4kix. Dont waste money on it for living room. Like I said, soundbar is only if you cannot install a 5.1 system and have no other option but a SoundBar. I have installed it in my bedroom where i dont have any space for a 5.1 system and also my stereo setup takes care of most needs,.

The soundbar is basically for my wife and kids to watch bluray and HD channels with simulated surround effect. Plus my bedroom is almost a perfect square which helps in producing the virtual effect

Thanks Ram & Just4Kix.

It seems Toshiba is phasing out 46" LED models across all series that they have. I remember seeing a 46PS20 model in Vijay Sales couple of months back & now that is taken off the models available on Toshiba website

For HT, wireless rear speakers are the option to go with OR i will have to change my option of going with wireless spekaers.

Thanks

I suggest that you buy the TV first and judge whether sound is good enough for you. There is no specific hurry to buy an HT. You can always do so later.
