After much research and side by side demos in multi brand stores, I have finally shortlisted the following 46 " - 47" 3D LEDs for my bedroom (viewing distance approx 9.4 feet):

1. LG LW 6500
2. Samsung D8000 or D7000

Though Samsung(s) definitely have more vibrant colors and LG more 'relaxed' colors but my wife and I feel that the Samsung colors will get too tiring for the eyes in the long run and also tend too look very unreal at times.

And another very interesting thing that I noticed about nearly all Samsung LEDs is that the picture at times on HD & SD channels looks like a 'home video' - like too life like and looses its charm (and required artificiality) specially while watching a Bollywood song or a movie. Wonder whether any one else thinks the same ?

Of course I very much feel that the 3D of LG including the 2D to 3D conversion is better than the Samsung. The active 3D of Samsung was too stressful for our eyes and the heavier glasses.

Therefore I request for inputs on the following points:

1. Is LG a safe brand name for LED panels in India ? The general perception being that Samsung makes the best LED panels.

2. Will the 'relaxed' LG colors tend to get unexciting while watching Tata Sky (95% of the usage) ?

3. I am getting the LG 47" LW 6500 for 1.10 lacs without any freebies from a LG showroom in Gurgaon. Is this a good deal ? Samsungs are for around 20 k more.

4. How do I know my LED is the latest 2012 production with the latest firmwares etc. I believe these LEDs came by the same model numbers in 2011 as well.

5. They say Delhi is cheaper than Gurgaon due to taxes ? Shall i start my hunt in Delhi for a better deal or would you recommend any other store in Gurgaon ?

I decided not to call for the LED from Bangkok etc. due to NO - INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY, despite whatever shopkeepers may claim there :D

Looking forward for your valuable inputs and thanks a ton.

Well its a personal choice. I do agree that initially the vibrant colors look awesome, but when you start using the TV daily, you would prefer natural colors as they are much more easier on the eyes. But again, its a personal choice. And anyways, with proper calibration, you can choose whether to have vibrant colors or make them seem more natural.

I suppose you are talking about that ultra smooth panning of cameras etc right? I found the same thing on my LG LW5700 tv as well. Initially I thought it looked cool, but as soon as I saw my first movie, I hate it. It makes all movies seem like saas bahu shows . I think there is a setting to turn this artifical effect off (though not sure about it, as I myself haven been able to turn it off yet).

Of course I very much feel that the 3D of LG including the 2D to 3D conversion is better than the Samsung. The active 3D of Samsung was too stressful for our eyes and the heavier glasses.

If 3D is a part of your selection criteria, then 'do not' look past the LG passive series. I did intensive research on the 3d aspects and demoed almost every 3dtv out there before I (and even my wife) totally agreed that passive technology is the way to go for 3d (active 3d gave us both a headache, and we couldnt watch past 2 minutes on any active 3dtv). And the 2d-3d conversion of LG is way beyond awesome (as compared to other 3dtvs). I do like to watch a lot of 3D stuff (specially a lot of 2d-3d converted tv channels) as it gives me a completely new perspective to watching stuff on tv. And being a gamer, I love the passive 3d on LG tv.

2D-3D only provides depth, but, disappointingly to me, that seems to be the trend with all movies and 3d channels now post Avatar, so keeping that in mind, I am actually watching 3d channels, or atleast how they would be in the near future. Pop-out effects seem to be a thing of the past, which is disappointing, as personally I liked the pop-out effects more than the depth when watching 3d :(! Currently I am looking for scenes with pop-out effects so that atleast I can show off the 3dtv :p!

Also, the passive glasses are the best!! Though I didnt mind the samsung active 3d glasses as well, which has all the electronics near your ears thus keeping the front panel light. But passive glasses, specially the party glasses u get with the tv, are just :yahoo:!

Therefore I request for inputs on the following points:

1. Is LG a safe brand name for LED panels in India ? The general perception being that Samsung makes the best LED panels.

Well I have heard different opinions on the same.

e.g. http://ipslcdpanel.blogspot.in/

Dont know if Samsung still uses the same VA panels though. But I didnt care much about it, as I read the reviews of the TV on this forum, and most of them praised the picture quality.

2. Will the 'relaxed' LG colors tend to get unexciting while watching Tata Sky (95% of the usage) ?

LG colors are still very bright, specially when you use the Vivid mode. So again, thats a personal choice!

3. I am getting the LG 47" LW 6500 for 1.10 lacs without any freebies from a LG showroom in Gurgaon. Is this a good deal ? Samsungs are for around 20 k more.

Cant comment.

4. How do I know my LED is the latest 2012 production with the latest firmwares etc. I believe these LEDs came by the same model numbers in 2011 as well.

The bar code sticker behind the TV mentions the manufacturing date. I just bought mine last week from a LG showroom near IIFCO chowk in Gurgaon, and the manufacturing date on the set was Feb 12.

5. They say Delhi is cheaper than Gurgaon due to taxes ? Shall i start my hunt in Delhi for a better deal or would you recommend any other store in Gurgaon ?

Yes, Delhi is cheaper than gurgaon due to taxes, though the price comes out to be the same, as the Delhi showroom people are hard to bargain with. Try the LG showroom in Nehru Place though, as that guy had initially quoted me the lowest price as compared to 20 other shops I went to. I ultimately bought the tv from Gurgaon itself as that shop was right next to my apartment and I also bought a refrigerator and microwave from them. Also, cartage was 'free' for all deliveries in Gurgaon, whereas I am not sure if the dealers from Delhi would provide free cartage.

I decided not to call for the LED from Bangkok etc. due to NO - INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY, despite whatever shopkeepers may claim there :D

Looking forward for your valuable inputs and thanks a ton.

My comments in Red above :D

samsung pq is anytime better than lg...i think in demo they set the picture settings to dynamic...turn it to natural & it should look the best. blu-rays are jaw dropping & no question out of it. Samsung has active 3D & lg has passive...i have samsung & i am ablsolutely happy with it..sony has better 2d than samsung but is very expensive just for a minute diff. but i like samsung colours. 3d is anytime better than sony.

Thanks for your so valuable comments. I think it boils down to - whats better to my eyes. In my case, I think LG. Specially when it is a few thousand rupees cheaper than Samsung. I am not a gamer, so do not want extra bright colors. But I def want to watch the coming IPL in 3D, for which I think LG 3D will be better for long hours viewing.

I hope I can get rid of the ultra smooth panning of cameras etc. to get more realistic picture quality and make all channels seems like Saas Bahu soaps camera work :)

I think I will pick it up the LED from Gurgaon only as I have heard that Delhi is at the most 2000 cheaper than Guragon. But if I can get an approx price figure for that I can use to close the deal with ?

Thanks for your help.

Hello Everyone,

I finally got my LG 47 LW6500 today and also installed. I have just had a few minutes of viewing till now and my first impression and query requests are as follows:

1. The colors are def more relaxed compared to Samsung, but in case you want to watch a particular channel in bright colors, then choose Vivid. Works fine.

2. I am not that impressed with the 2d to 3d conversion till now. I tried adjusting the settings, by increasing the 3d depth and all, bu not of much use. My wife's first impression was that - "the conversion is not as good as shown in the showroom". And we did see the conversion in the showroom on Tata Sky only (and not those pre loaded videos that seem to work wonders). However the 2d to 3d conversion of HD channels is way better. But again there is no 3d effect as such. I think it just gives the images a 'some' depth. I also tried a few DVD Rip torrents and some 720 p movies, but the quality of 3D conversion was more or less the same.

May be any of the experts here can suggest the settings that I should try for better 3d effect ?

3. The 3d glasses are very comfortable and don't cause much irritation to the eyes over prolonged viewing. Much better than Samsung. Though now I am not sure whether Samsung (D7000) would have converted better 3d due to Active technology.

4. The installation was not up to the mark at all. The LG technicians seemed to be in a hurry and did not bother much with the demo and features.

5. The Magic Remote motion detector device (attached to the LED) is not working right now !!! As per the technician the detector needs to be replaced. LG tried to put the onus on the dealer for the change and vice verse. I finally lost my patience and asked the dealer to the coordination and that I want the detector replaced ASAP. Now the LG service manager has assured me that a 'Senior technician" will visit me tomorrow morning and check it. Hope the problem is resolved or else I will escalate the matter by whatever mean necessary.

6. The sound is not very impressive as most manufacturers now have done away with the sound bars and just provide in built speakers. I have a Sony 45 inch V series LCD also purchased when these TVs were direct imports and you can make our the difference in quality in sound from the sound bar and the rest.

I am presently downloading 2 3D 1080 torrents to check it on the LED and hopefully I should have it completely downloaded for Senior Technician's visit tomorrow.

7. I will request you to let me know as to what type, size and format of 3D files I should be downloading for it to work perfectly directly in 3d (not 2d to 3d conversion). I noticed most of the 3D movies are atleast approx 8 - 10 GB in size and take forever to download and not forgetting that 2 such downloads will consume my entire high speed data allowance for the month. Any suggestions ?

8. I have also been thinking of getting a UPS for the LED and Tata Sky HD as in my area there is constant power failure, though the back up starts in about 15 seconds. But every time the power fails and the back up in switched on, the Tata Sky starts on the home page and it takes me a while to go back to the channel that I was viewing. This is extremely annoying !!!

9. Now for the price - After much research I purchased this for 1,05,000 (Gurgaon) after exchanging my 4 years old 29 LG Flatron crt tv. Do you think I got a good deal ? I used Bajaj Allianz for a 8 month interest free finance plan which had no processing charges. Anyways I plan to repay the entire amount in next 3 months.

Please do let me know about my queries so to make my viewing experience much better.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Karan,we bought 47" LW6500 for 1.06 lac at a Bajaj electronics store in Hyderabad with freebies.I think you can bargain for more.I've seen that the same model went for 1.04 to another guy but we already made the deal by then and so couldn't go back to the bargaining table. So Good luck and see if they can come down a bit more for that one. :)

Thanks Dinni17. But I have already purchased the LED.Now I think I could convinces the dealer for some freebies atleast such the wireless dongle, pend drive etc. Feel like kicking myself for it. But something that has been really annoying me is that all LEDs have a kind of 'live' or 'home video' kind of effect on the image quality ? Is there anyways I can adjust the settings to get the images a little normal ?

Thanks,

Follow the dedicated LG 6500/5700 thread
Most of your queries would have benn answered already.

To remove the "home video" effect, set trumotion to off.
Over/Under 3d format is suggested for passive 3d tv's
I have posted the calibrated settings in the above mentioned thread.

Hi Karan,Yeah you can definitely try to have the dealer give you some freebies atleast. Now to the Home Video effect,Sri072 is right. There is a calibration settings that is posted here before.let me give you the link to make it easier.

Check out Rahul_virus's post and click on the link he gave in the page which says 'Google translate'.I'm using CNET settings for LW5700/5600 from that page.By Default in Expert1 Settings that came with the TV,there is a bit of a too much blue i've noticed.I tried on CNET settings and love it.let me know how it goes.

Thanks Sri and Dinni for your valuable inputs. Will look into the related links and revert.

Also I have just posted a wireless headphone connectivity issue in the LG 5700/6500 owner's thread (as I thought that was the right place for it) and request you once again to look into and let me know what you think. My post should be hopefully be allowed by the moderator soon and should display there. Pasting the link below for convenience -

Thanks again guys. Have a good week ahead.

Hi friends. It's been nearly a year since I purchased the LG LW6500 and I must say that this LED turned out to be a delight. The clarity in particular to the HD channels and 720p movies is quite brilliant. Even the 3D is worth every penny spent. Now with summers here, there is constant power failure in my society though the back up starts withing a few seconds. But every time the back up turns on, my Tata Sky or the Asus media player resets and I need to either surf to the required channel or in case of the media player restart and then fwd the video. This is extremely annoying to say the least. Also I feel that this constant switch to back up power might even harm the electronics.

I was thinking about connecting a UPS to my audio video set up ( 47"LED; Tata Sky HD; Asus Mini O media player; Sharp sound bar and a wireless headphone). I do not want to spend much money on the UPS and therefore request the experts here to recommend the best option to suit my needs. I searched online for APC BR 600 CI- IN BACK UPS 600 VA costing around 2400/-. My question is that whether this device will suffice for my entire set up - as detailed above.

My concern is not the time for which the UPS can provide back up as the power back up starts instantly, but the capacity of this UPS should not harm the electronics. I was also thinking of plugging the individual components of mybset up to a Belkin surge protector extension board - that I will connect from the UPS. I have presently plugged the electronics into an Anchor extension board which has a 'fuse protector'.

Please let me know your thoughts and whether this UPS will suffice with a Belkin surge protector. Or do your recommend an alternative and somewhat the same price range ?

Thanks for your help.

PS: I know there are other threads on similar topics, but I am not sure whether they are conclusive.

The effect of video appearing like "home video" or a "saas-bahu" serial, is known as the soap opera effect. This happens when the TV tries to artificially correct motion judder and introduce motion smoothening. LCD panels (LED TVs are also LCD TVs) suffer from slow response. Hence these TVs employ high refresh rates and anti-judder technology to "improve" the motion. Read all about it here: The Soap Opera Effect: When your TV tries to be smarter than you | Common Sense Tech - CNET News

600VA is enough to power the listed devices. I think APC comes with a surge protector built-in. If so, you can use skip the belkin protector.

Thanks for your valuable input. do you recommend APC as a quality brand ? I could not find much reviews on it though one review did state that the battery of this UPS is of bad quality and needs replacement very soon. Any other brand or make that is recommended for my requirements ? Thanks.
