I have been pondering about this for a while and thought maybe the home theatre buffs on this forum will have some answers.

I love good movies and I was wondering how folks who have high end home theatres actually source their
movies. There are so many good movies in many languages across the world. If you have a high quality home theatre, I sure you dont want to download some low quality rip from somewhere and play it. Buying blu rays for all the movies you want to see is not a possibility since many movies do not have any repeat value unlike music.

Long time back, I used have a membership in this lovely movie library called habitat on church street. Great place for movies off the beaten path. Place like that have closed shop. Nowadays, I can only see mainstream dvd rental shops who stock almost all the crap movies.

For music, we have places to go and download legal stuff. Buying cds are not so costly, people buy, share and before you know it, and you have a great collection.

How do you movie buffs do it ? Just curious.

Blu-Rays are the best way to enjoy movies. But buying BDs is always not possible and affordable. I am using 1080p or 720p BRRips and they give very good PQ and 5.1 sound. Only if BRRip is not available, I download DVD Rips.

I buy the BD if I really want the movie. If its something that is watch once and forget types, I just get a 1080p rip. Bluray prices in India are pretty much unaffordable - we pay 2-3x of what most western countries pay.

This is where things go wrong. People pay way too much attention on the equipments. Few want to spend on the "source".

Regardless of how high quality a system, fed by a low quality source it's output will be low quality. OTOH, even an average system will come on the top fed with good source.

For movies that I care for, I buy the best print/resolution available/affordable. Average stuff (movies worth watching just once) I don't care. For example, I might have watched KHNH several times. I'd happily buy the best print available for it. But movies like Burfi, I will watch once with whatever source, but won't buy expensive disk.

Buy BR for my favorite movies as well as those which come at a cheap price, :p. Subscribed to BR Rental Service as well. Otherwise 12-16 GB BR Rips. Except for TV Shows I do not watch lower quality movies at all.

buy a good graphic card..480p movie can be upgraded to 1080p with ease and near equal quality.. ofcourse good amplifier/ av receiver is required for 2.0 source to up grade to 5.1/7.1..

I too buy the classics which have repeat value on blu ray.

But what about the ones which are fun but are good for only one watch ? Are downloading blu ray rips the only way ? Are all movies available as rips online ? Blu ray rental is almost non existent especially in Bangalore except for places like Jayanagar. I have been living in Indranagar / koramangala area for a while. I dont even know one good quality blu ray rental.

Upscaled content will never come close to original blu-ray disk quality. So is the case with audio. A 2 channel audio converted to 5.1 is not pure surround.

habitat is still open. I was there last month and discovered that minaz is also selling second hand vinyl.
you can also try Mothay for bluray rental. he has shops on infantry road and jayanagar and, if I'm not mistaken, they do home delivery.

Oh...they had closed for a while. I guess they must have reopened. But going to MG road is a big hassle these days so cannot use them for regular movie watching.

I must try Mothay for blu ray rental.
