Can anybody suggest how to get good quality music from entry Lever AVR. I have an Onkyo 3500 home theatre but not satisfied with stereo performance. Pls suggest if possible to enhance the music experience

There are few deficiencies in your query, kindly update us on the following info to help you better.
1. Room size, current positions of speakers
2. Room pics /diagram
3. Type of music you listen to
4. What is the source for your music
5. Budget - if you are going to invest further or not? If yes how much?
6. What is currently lacking in your existing system, bass, vocals, resolution or HF response etc..

Without knowing about the above parameters it'll be tough to suggest, but let me try.

1. Try with room EQ if your AVR has that option, configure for only 2 speakers and Subwoofer and see if you like the sound. Note the EQ parameters and readjust them when you are listening in stereo mode.
2. Play with the positioning front speakers, move them away from walls by using mounts (TV mount etc)
3. Upgrade to better speaker wire about 12awg thickness..

Hi,
First of all remember one thing don’t compare your AVR with a Stereo Amp, what you can do is buy a DAC, give the analog out from your DAC to the Aux in ie the analog in of your AVR, this may give you a better sound.

Replace those cheap plastic single driver satellite speakers to something as basic as a Norge Ultimo or similar speaker and you will get far superior audio reproduction. Sure helps to feed some good source material too.

Hi

Entry Level AVRs would have limited settings which you can tweak to your requirements.....Its the Mid segment and high end ones which allow further tweaking based on user expectations and requirements...

There are WARM AVRs which are more music inclined (Marantz), Some are more Movies (Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo) and Yamaha is 50:50..Bright side.....again...it all depends on model to model and which speakers you are using.....

Which speakers are you using? The same ones that came with it? Possibly if you have some one close around, you can borrow speakers and check if there is a difference (Please check all technical aspects of watts handling and impedance before connecting).

AVRs have the autosetup feature which does conservative adjustments to output and tonal aspects.....in short the hidden output potential is UNTAPPED in an AVR....this i can say with personal experience over the last 2 decades using a variety of amps and avrs.......end of the day...besides the surround features and processing....the AVR has a amplifier section, only has more than 2 channels......

I use a Marantz SR series AVR which i have calibrated for a 5.1 setup using audyssey ....then i manually adjusted the EQ (9 band for each speaker) and the levels too....I am more of a music lover and enjoy excellent stereo sound....movies is not at all affected.....the experience is great...i have no regrets.

We never do an auto setup for a stereo amp...directly hook on speakers and enjoy the output.......if you have manual settings available in the AVR, tweak the levels slightly, adjust the bass and treble.....do all this carefully and slowly increase the volume.....use your favourite CD or song as reference to check if there is any difference....

There are dedicated threads of Marantz, Pioneer, Taga, Yamaha etc where you can check and post your experience....i am sure similar Onkyo users will respond immediately the best solution!

With my limited experience , I think it is too much to expect 'good quality' stereo music from entry level AVRs. In fact even ones costing much more (mid end ones ) sound half good when it comes to 2 channel music . Most AVRs are built to cost and they have their task cut out . To expect them to multi task is OK ..But to expect them to multi task effectively is where the issue is .

Having said that some of the options which you could try ;
  1. Replace the front L-R to some compact bookshelves .
  2. If your AVR has preout , try to source a used / low end stereo amp for them and route through AVR to minimize cabling
  3. With satellites you can't do much , but with bookshelves try to play with positioning and degree of toe in
  4. Personally I will leave the auto eq or manual eq untouched and set it at pure stereo / straight through option so that it gives me the best chance at hearing an unadulterated sound .
  5. Resort to eq as the last option if all the above options fail to make an impact to sq
To do all this , I would just recommend you to spend 25k and get superb sounding Dedicated Stereo setup for music . If you look through the HFV classified section and choose wisely ..25k is moFe than enough

After being on both boats to n fro, trust me when I say that an avr ISC designed and built for multi channel content while a stereo amp is designed and built for stereo content. They just excel in what they are designed for.

Now to improve stereo performance of your AVR, factory reset it and manually set it up, levelling the front speakers sitting in your primary position. Next check your source. Good quality source and transport make a very big difference. Doing these you can improve the quality but still be limited to the design of the components.

Want good stereo sound, get a stereo amp.

whatever you do, the stock speakers that came along with the package may not show huge improvement.
Get a pair of good bookshelfs for front left and right. Im pretty sure this makes a lot of difference.

If you want to keep the existing speakers, then follow the suggestions given by other FMs above.
