All, been listening to Rahmans muaic all along. But hard Ilayarajas compositions are very good too. Can you please point me to some must listens. TIA

Ilayaraja has many facets in his composition. What's your poison? Modern recordings only? Voice as instrument, strings based, symphony style, tabla based?

If you will start listening to Ilayaraja songs you will ofcourse become a fan. There are a lot of movies. I think around 7000 songs he composed.
You can find a lot during 80s and 90s.

Huge fan of Ilayaraja here. Ask me my favourite songs. I will blink because they run into thousands. His music is soulful and supports all your emotions. You must listen to them to realise this statement.

You can begin with (use headphone)

Started off just like you. Mostly an arr fanatic, then Ilayaraja’s music slowly grow into me. Now I’m wandering between alaipayuthey to alaigal oyvathillai .

Best starting point would be to listening to your favourite singer in Ilayaraja’s composition and slowly move on to the others. My personal favourites are his 80s music..

Being from Calcutta, whenever I used to get opportunity to visit Madras in the 90's, I used to visit the cassette shops and ask for the shopkeeper's recommendation for some good music. Invariably the cassettes I used to get strong recommendation for, were all Ilayaraja music.
That way I came to know about the music of "Michael Madana Kama Rajan', "Anjali", "Apoorva Sagodharargal", "Thalapathi", "Mouna Ragam", "Puthu Paatu" etc. movies. They still remain to be my favourites.

Regards

I have never heard any.
Sir if I anybody will ask the same question 2 year back my answer will be same. I don't know Ilayaraaja songs.
But now I can honestly say I don't like to listen tamil songs after 1990's. Earlier I know only A.R Rahman in tamil but everything changed.
Just swim through the Ilayaraaja sea you will find a lot of treasure.

I'm familiar with some of releases in hindi (shamitabh, paa) they are awesome.

Then went along and got anjali and one other tamil album.. Again, awesome. his songs have good melody..

I also made an impulse purchase of over 30 plus 45 and 33 rpm lps of old tamil releases..
