Has anyone got modded ipod, RWA or DIY modded? If yes, how it sounds? Have got chance to come across modded ipod and s:flo2 comparison?

I got an imod ipod from a fm. doesn't work most of the times and it is lying in some corner of my house. I even got the hard disk replaced :(

To answer the second part of your query - HM-801, T51, RWA Imod, Ipod Classic, and X1060! | Headfonia

Even I am interested in converting my used iPod 5G into an iMod if it's worth it. Ritvik on TE had an iMod, IIRC

Portable Man, I gone through the comparison, interesting. Have you ever thought of doing a comparison on DAP? I would like to hear from a native instead of a foreign review. It would reveal more to our taste. I think.

The funny thing is, many of these imods etc seem to end up in the head fi classifieds on a regular basis. SQ impressions are generally positive though.

I do think that iMod / diyMod could be better than the stock. Average_joe uses two of them and he mentioned that iMod is better, but then I guess law of diminishing returns would apply.

One can always dream. I think right now it is a bug fixed and working-to-all-the-hype-and-claims iBasso DX100 (which has both 6.3mm and 3.5mm jacks and plenty of power supposedly) with Hidition NT-6 as custom, AKG K3003 as universal and Beyer T1 as headphone (as a backup source to the 1/3rd of the day when I do not have power) would be nicer than living in a private island surrounded by Victoria's secret models.

PS1: No Bankruptcy. It's only a dream.

PS2: Before you dismiss, VS models and island ownership are many times costly than an audiophool's wet dream.

To me..PMPs are over hyped by the HiFiers..

1st. Headphone / IEM is not ideal for critical listening. A good stereo setup can easily provide much better enjoyment.

2nd. When you are outside...when driving or commuting or at office, the outside noise is high for critical listening. You will get distracted from music easily. It is mostly fun listening. Minor benefits acquired from expensive DACs are easily crushed here.

I learned this in a hard way...

Why would you want to mod an iPod in the first place? The components from listening to quality audio is terrible. The closest you can come to getting the best out is to buy an iWadia or Onkyo DN-S1 dock for the iPod (note: Onkyo does not work with iPhone). As you know, these devices read raw aac files and process them without going through the ipod audio signal processors at all.

I don't think PMPs are even cared about Hi-Fi-ers who typically use it as a second rung rig. I think you meant Head-fiers. But then the same applies to everything - no forum is free of hype.

Just to put in another perspective....

I almost always use portable / transportable bricks at home or in quieter environments and I never let other things distract me when I am listening. It's much easier to do critical listening with IEMs - at least for me.

Second, even a headphone setup leave alone a proper stereo setup would be useless when you have 8 hours of scheduled power cut and a few random cuts. I am really happy with my decision to clean up my speaker gear much earlier. Otherwise, I would probably be murmuring

"What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black with pointy horns
Turn around quick, and start to run"

Thirdly, while I accept in theory that Speakers > Headphones > IEMs, the cost, storage space, the number of variables and convenience are in the reverse order. I can store 20 IEMs, 5 headphones + 3-4 players in a rack. I can't get the same variety with speaker setup. One day I am a treble junkie and use CK10 and another day I am in mood for FX700. I would never be able to repeat that with a speaker setup. A proper speaker setup may have actual sound stage than a head stage, may be more immersing, intimate and lively, but I will stay where I am - hype or hyperbole ;)

IEM's I agree are not necessarily meant for critical listening, however a no. of headphones are - top end Senn, Grado, Ultrasone, Beyerdynamic, Shure... In fact they remove the constraints of room acoustics and placement (almost) completely.

Your context is not right here. No one does critical listening outside. Same reason, all songs used for critical listening are done in enclosed environments while laying a single track at a time after many, many reviews of the playback.

Can you name the headphones you have in mind? From what I read, a number of performers use custom IEMs on stage, while headphones are typically used for studio/mixing use.

I know preferences are very subjective. At least, in my experience, I have bought many universal IEMs, but own / heard only a few headphones (only up-to mid-fi ones like DT880/600 and HD600). So far, the headphones have not matched the experience I get with my favorite universals (a touch short, good but not great). I am still searching for a decent upgrade in headphones (T1 / LCD2 rev2 / HE-500), but waiting until the whole power situation gets a little better.

In head-fi, i have read that many owners of LCD2/HD800 and other top end headphones indeed prefer speakers over headphones.

Here is one of my favt thread in head-fi..Headphones are great. But will never be speakers.

What i meant by critical listening is..

1. Sitting comfortably in the couch
2. With a glass of wine in hand
3. Enjoying the music with full blast

:P

WOW...

Talk about audio snobbery. I'm sorry but "critical listening"...?

Really dude?

Do you work in the industry?

Are you an audio producer?

Um...I'll go with no for those questions. Your blatant ignorance of IEM's is astounding Mr. "Critical Listening".

I can say without a doubt that is is people like you sir that cause "head-fi" aficionado's to be put off and call disrespectful snobs.

Good gods it's blatant all over this site!

How dare other people do something which I do not hold in as high a regard? How can people enjoy themselves in an apparently meaningless way? These people are obviously fools because they do not share my idea of enjoyment. This form of entertainment is lowbrow, etc etc. Curse you all for liking popular things.

An idea which I totally love. Sarcasm and arrogance at it's best.
