Is it worth importing a tv from the US and. Ring it here in india?

The 55" b6 oled here is over 2L. Buying it from the us is $1500(approx 1L) then having it shipped and pay taxes. Im sure when you total that it comes below what is being charged in india.

The 55" sont xbr900E is same value 1500 and its not available yet here.

Yes there is no warranty but seriously is warranty being followed here? I bought a plasma tv from croma and within 2 yrs it conked off. I had a 3 yr warranty but they refused to honor it.

voltage convertor will be required other then that you wont get warranty but will get after sales service and Lg is pretty good at that. Customs can get tricky though it all depends on their mood and who is in charge. You may end up paying a hefty fees and it may get stuck in customs for a while up to a whole month in some cases.

Most US TVs are NTSC only. I had got back one from US when I returned. Can't watch TataSky or any cable.

Custom duty in ship cargo is very cheap.

There is nothing like Ocean cargo is cheap and Air cargo is high. Both are same duty structure only as per the HS code. The duty charged is on the CIF (cost+insurance+freight)

Its not worth importing cause it will attract full duty. Its better some one brings it and the duty is almost flat 15K for a 55 incher.

Thank you guys for your inputs.

So instead of importing, if i go abroad and bring it with me, would that be better?

No,customs duty added to the original cost will add up to a cost which will be more than the cost of the tv in India

Yes. It's better for your sanity in the long run to purchase in India. If you're hauled up by a grumpy customs official who just had a tooth extracted...

5 years back I had bought 2 lg tvs,one each from dubai and bangkok. After paying duty the cost worked out 16k rs cheaper for the 42 incher and no duty for the 32 incher. That is not the situation today.
One advantage for which I would suggest you to buy from abroad is that they are of a superior quality being made in Korea.

Absolutely true and what If something goes bad with it... No warranty nothing. If the panel goes bad then all the cost u saved with importing it becomes redundant. You might even end up spending more.
These days, trust me, warranty matters a lot. I used to be in favor of getting imported tvs or getting them my self from abroad when I travel to places like dubai or Thailand but not anymore. No matter what the savings are because now we also have almost 30-35% duty which needs to be paid and then if something goes bad thenonwy down then drain.

Absolutely yes. I was in Thailand this February. 55 & 65 inchers were dirt cheap compared to india. Please note you are allowed to bring upto 55" in any airline without additional freight of course with in your weight limits. 65" is not allowed even if it is with in limits.

You'll still pay 30-40% taxes

Duty is exactly 33.6% but when we bring it personally they are not calculating it like that. At the least in Chennai port they have a fixed tariff. For 55" standard TV duty around 15K for smart TV upto 20K. I dont know about other ports.

please don't bring 32 to 42" they are not viable, cause the saving is not phenomenal to sacrifice the warranty. Whereas for 52 & 55" its worth doing it.

I have enough experience in all mode of importing right from 5gms and 5$ to 180kgs and 3500$. whatever i have now and sold all are direct imports or personally brought by me.

If we can save a lakh of rupee in a 55incher we can Cooley dump the warranty. Even 3 years extended warranty is meaningless cause after two years your 2lakhs TV will sell for 75K. what is the point.

Any electronics if we can get 40% and above less price we can Cooley dump the warranty. In case any thing happens with in 12 months you have the 40% buffer to pay and repair. If it conks after 12 months your saving of 40% indemnifies you. After 24 months if it conks you can by the similar one in good working condition itself in 40% cost cause by then the price would have dropped down. If it works without any flaw for more than 3years then you have infact saved that 40% for future upgrade.

My two cents.
