Hey,

As the title says, I am a very casual music listener. I listen to anything that sounds good, I am fickle and am not particularly biased towards or against any type of music. I like rock more than others, but in general I listen to a wide variety of music, including instrumental stuff.

I have a budget of NOT MORE THAN 800 bucks and would like to buy in ear earphones for around that much. My requirements would be:

1. Durability - they will be subject to rigorous travel and general murder. I'd like to stress that this is THE biggest priority. Mumbai trains and all :)
2. Good bass levels - I like my music to have a thump about it.
3. The sound should be really clear and handle a variety of music (and voice - audiobooks :))

My audio device is my 8 gig iPod touch and/or my Samsung Galaxy 3, but I believe that earphones for one do not work properly on the other due to the difference in the jacks or something? My primary playback will be through the iPod.

Then it is probably not much help to tell you that I was quite impressed with the about-Rs1,000 Sonys (MDR-55 I think) that we bought for my wife last year?

Eaten by the family dog, they were replaced in Singapore, last week for S$36, but there was a quality issue, in that the first two off the shelf didn't work (one dead channel) out of the box. Sony ought to be better than that! Advice: unpack and test before leaving shop!

I don't know about your Galaxy, but many Nokia phones have a smaller-than-standard socket. I believe it is 2.5mm instead of the usual 3.5mm. Adapters are available. We bought a short 3.5-to-2.5 adapter cable (in Singapore) and my wife uses her earphones happily with her Nokia as well as with her MP3 player.

I dont find pl-11 that pleasing..but pl-30s are descent.. I'll suggest Creative EP - 630.. they are descent and durable as well..

At your price range durability is a tough thing to come across! the previously mentioned soundmagics and the sennheiser CX300 would be good choices, the latter with considerable isolation and a strong bass response are good candidates - but their wires are pretty thin and might not be able to take a beating too often! Also give a shot at the Phillips SHE 9550.

The PL21 would be a good option. Its in your budget, very durable and has sufficient bass for your needs.
You could also try Creative ep630 or Fischer audio Toughstuff series.

First of all, Since you are already owning a iPod, I assume you are trying to 'upgrade' the headphones which came with your iPod.

If that is the case, the matter of fact is, for 800/- none of the ear phones available in the market is going to be an 'upgrade'. Few will sound better than the stock iPod headphones but will expose other flaws.

Creative EP-630 can be a choice but still they are not as durable as your application demands and are only slightly better than stock iPod headphones in sound quality.

You are better of saving 800/- and using the stock headphones unless the form factor or sound isolation is the real concern.

Well,
Isolation Can Be Taken Care of If He Requires

Well.. I've used the Pl-11s and the Ep-630s..and I preferred 630 more.. the quality was better. Haven't tried the Pl-21.

Besides Creative EP-630, Meelctronics M2 and M9 are worth consideration.
One caveat,Creative EP-630 has too many fakes so buy from proper place and insist that there is importer's declaration with MRP in India Rupees.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
