To all you networking and Ipad gurus
Really appreciate some help/advice
Since the wifi signal on my HTPC is low (30 odd feet from router) the touch pad app is a hit or miss from my ipad. I can connect the HTPC through cat cable from the wifi router.

My question: Is there some way I can connect the toucpad to the HTPC which is hard wired to the wifi router?

Aiwa! Now you are becoming a full fledged 'fruit'y man! I expect a macbook pro within a year. :)

Edit: Are you trying to control VLC or Foobar?

Budget willing the Pro within a year, yes :D
regarding the query, well everything. I want the touchpad as a substitute for my mouse and keypad.

Not able to understand the query.

If you have managed to wire the htpc to the router, then is your regular sitting position too far away from the router, else why do you have a problem using the ipad as a controller. I am presuming you are using an app like the logitech mouse controller.

Would also consider using the logitech wireless keyboard/mouse, might be simpler to use?

even if that is possible, you are losing portability. the whole point of buying a portable device is lost. Why dont you bring the router closer, or buy a repeater?

Connecting htpc to the router using cat cable should not change anything except it will have ip connectivity always. It will no longer have range issues. You should be able to use your iPad as it is. Connect iPad through wifi and you should be able to control htpc.

If you have an issue with wifi signal on iPad then consider having a wifi repeater to boost the signal.

My regular seating position is about 20 ft from router. The distance between the Ipad to the router is not the issue. The signals are pretty good on the Ipad. The htpc is a further 20 feet away. Thats where the signals are weak and thus the HTPC cant connect o touchpad.

Yes use the app instead of the mouse/keyboard. A regular logitech one would be to much of a hassle as compared to an ipad.

The Ipad is connected via wifi to the router so portability is there. Changing the router position would mean rewiring the incoming Reliance cable and repositioning the router which seems too much of a task.

Moreover
1. my htpc has enough hardware to double up as a potential NAS. Since all of my browsing and downloads are done on the laptop, I can transfer data more efficiently to the htpc through a wired connection as opposed to hassles gone through with a wireless one.

2. Along with this if I can get the touchpad to work in the above chain, perfect.

3. And I reckon my bluray player or any future additions to the HIFI set up in my HT would need FW upgrades. So a wired net connection right uptill the source would make these upgrades much more easier.

A repeater is what I initially set out to install. But I've read on the net, a repeater would slow down data transfer speed by half. Acutally I do have a spare wifi router which I thought I'd use as a repeater but unfortunately the model is netgear WGR614 v9 which can't be used as one.

As stated above the repeater is what I had in mind if the Netgear I had with me would work. But that doesn't. Not to mention the hassle of turning a wifi router into a repeater. Then the above benefits came to my mind.

I've bought the cat 6 cable and I'll check out today and see what happens.

I use the DLINK DIR-505 in repeater mode. Small and neat device. It is been working fine for last couple weeks. The router I have is DLINK 2750 but should work with other make of wifi routers as well.

Reading at your previous post looks like the issue is with the signal strength of WIFI. This should be solved if you use CAT5 connection to HTPC. No need to repeater in that case as signal to IPAD is fine.

Hey gijo
have you tried the remote desktop app ?

i have been meaning to try this myslef

You can use a repeater or opt for a better wifi receiver on your HTPC whichever you fell is cheaper.

Ideally for HTPC you should use dual band router in your room since video files (such as unripped blurays etc) need more bandwidth. One more plus is they have few USB ports to connect to hard disks or be used as FTP servers.

there are 100s of ways to boost wifi,
an assisted antenna is one:

Rii mini,is on good keyboard for htpc.

The directional antenna may not work for me as the htpc is located in a different room. I'm assuming the dish antenna sends signals mostly in a single direction.

Besides I've allready ordered for Amazon.com: Lenovo N5902 Enhanced Multimedia Remote with Backlit Keyboard (57Y6678): Computers & Accessories

Managed to get the touchpad working on the htpc albeit not very smoothly and experienced a lot of problems with the cursor. So decided to go in for above. Hopefully the Lenovo will work out fine.
