Folks
My wife just got an unlocked US Iphone 4S as a gift, and I got the SIM card (Tata Docomo GSM)cut to micro sim size and inserted into it. The phone is not getting activated-the screen shows a message that the SIM card is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy assigned by the activation served.

What should I do next?Any advice welcome..

I plan to go to the Tata Docomo office and ask what to do.

Hi George, get that sim exchanged to an actual micro sim from tatadocomo, cutting the sim will only give you the correct dimension perimeter wise, but the thickness of the simcard is different and this has caused an issue to a lot of them. Maybe an actual microsim would work.

Cheers.

George, the phone you have is locked to a carrier. Can you please check the IMEI and tell if it starts with "01" ?

Hi

Thanks. I checked.IMEI is 99 000XXXXXXXXXX, It says carrier is Verizon,, I suspect it must be as you say, and I may need an unlock code from them. I tried my phone's Micro SIM(Airtel) and get the same message. Will ask my son to get the unlock code from Verizon.

Hi George,

Typically the unlock procedure is via iTunes. The phone has not come unlocked. Please write to verizon and they will send you the steps to unlock. They will advice you to connect to iTunes and restore phone.

Same thing happened when I got a phone from Dublin and iTunes dint work and then I simply used a Gevyvsim which worked.

Cheers...

If the phone is sent by your son, then he can just ask Verizon to get the phone unlocked, provided his contract is up with them.

After they confirm the unlock, connect the phone to iTunes and restore. You'll get a message that the phone has been unlocked although I didn't get that message. In my case, I just connected the phone to WiFi during activation and it's went through smoothly.

Yes, I have asked him to have a word with Verizon-he also told me that it gets done through Itunes, though he said in the US normally they remain online and talk you through the process.

Ok so here's the skinny-my son called and spoke to Verizon and apparently the IphoneS is the only one that needs a Verizon SIM card to be actually inserted into it for it to go through the unlock process. So it has to go back to the US!
