Is BluRay Player a good media player replacement?

Mine came with the latest firmware installed, hence there is no new update as of now.
I cross checked the Sony support site and the latest firmware is below :

File Description UPDATE Blu-ray Disc Player Firmware Upgrade Release Date 9/25/2013 Version M15.R.0163 File Size 101.07 MB

The biggest issue these days with using a bluray player for playing downloaded rips is Cinavia. Since pretty much every player is riddled with cinavia now, if the player detects the cinavia watermark in the audio, the player stops playing the file midway.

Cinavia is the reason I have kept one extra non-cinavia bluray player as a backup. ;-) It is put away just in case my current bluray player dies.

Coming to the original question ...

It is my strict personal opinion that BD players are not a good replacement for media players. While BD players can play back media from the HDD, some may place restrictions. The menu will be very rudimentary and little cumbersome. BD player is best suited for regular BD/DVD watchers with occassional downloads while media player is best suited for downloaders. But one thing where BD player scores over media player is that while a BD player can play discs, a media player can't (except Dune).

Hi Kix,

Now i Have a basic question that do these media players are capable of doing upscale as well like a decent BD player does (e.g. Pioneer BD450)?

I don't see any of the media player mentions that.

More over there is a sea of Media player which one to choose?

Some gotten my attention, and also left me confused than before.

I also would like to know about the questions asked in the above post.. Also is hi10p (10 bit x265 based) format compatibility confirmed by any of these players?

I heard Pioneer BDP-450 is pretty versatile. With hacked firmware, you can basically play everything. And it comes with Marvell's QDEO.

I think so. For Blu-ray player can play other format, but other players can't play blu-rays. That is the advantage.
