I have been in the lookout for an Home theatre setup and was auditioning few hifi setups for past few weeks.
I have auditioned Denon 1911 and the sound from this amp is stunning and finally zeroed on this one.

I got an offer for a display piece from RicherSounds, UK at 190 ( Around Rs.14k) but the sales guy discouraged me from buying this amp saying that its difficult to calibrate it and few customers have returned it back finding hard to play with the settings.

Is this true?
I was so impressed with the sound that I thought this would be the one for me but hearing this from the salesperson was a bit annoying.
Has anyone experienced issues with Denon 1911, is it quite difficult to set it up?

Prabhu me thinks that is not the case. I have had all my auditions with Denon 1611/1911/2311 and i dont think that is an issue at all

I own a Denon 1911. It is very user friendly. Of course its not like Plug and Play, non of the mid range AVRs in the market are. It offers you option to click few buttons to enhance the sound.

It not very technical. Main operations are in the Menu, changing the db levels of various speakers overriding the Audyssey settings, and switching on and off the ipscaler. Thats pretty much I need to do and mine gives very good results.

Doesn't get very hot. 14K is a super price. I got it for 17K from US. you won't need a transformer as well.

I would say go for it.

Any AVR, not just Denon, is not user friendly for the average person. It is not as if, you connect the cables, power-on and "Bob's your uncle".

It takes a lot more than that:
  • should I use HDMI or component or composite?
  • the rear side contains so many inputs that it gets confusing; for example, there are four HDMI-in and two of them are marked as DVD and HDP. Which one to use?
  • the terminals are so cramped together that it is difficult to connect, especially the speakers if you do not have banana plugs.
  • the whole rear-side gets so crowded with wires, that it becomes difficult to figure out what is what
  • finally the speakers need callibration using tools such as Audyssey or manually

Not let me say that for a technically inclined and knowledgeable person, it may sound easy. But it can really turn off anyone else. Those who say it is easy to connect an AVR, I will ask them, just disconnect everything and ask your spouse, parents, or any average person to do this.

But that is not to say that it is not the right choice. The AVR gives a lot more finnesse to the whole setup.

Regarding the UK price. The Denon AVR-1911 is being replaced by AVR-1912. Hence the discount and plus it is a demo piece.

Onkyo amps are very easy to set up.Denon are little hard with little complex menu. But newer AVR has better on screen menu & once you have the AVR,it will be easy to learn.

Thank you all. That clarifies my doubts.
Would go for Denon 1911 and will try playing with it for some time.

Denonn AVR 1911 is pretty user friendly with its remote, like wise one time setup will do fine for you.The price ur getting the best in market...

In my opinion, you purchased a mid-line good AVR but now you are trying to cut corners with speakers. Your speakers should increase your budget to 50k at least (if purchasing speakers in India).

which speaker set, within 50 K, team up best with 1911 ? looking at music 70 % ( good rock beats to nice old hindi ghazals ) and 30 % movies - with more emphasis on spoken word ...

rahul

Uh .. Oh! Your preference is music. So you will have to choose quality fronts - at least bookshelfs if not FS. Since Rock and Gazals is your choice, the bass and mid-range must be pretty up there.

Your budget is bound to go up slightly. I will recommend that you buy FS worth upto 30k, sub worth 15k, center worth 8-10k and satellite surrounds worth 10k. A total of 65k. Needless to say, that speakers should match the AVR and should be auditioned. Wharfedale, Mordaunt Short, Monitor Audio, Polk Audio, Tannoy, etc. will be good brands to select from.

energy take classic 5.1 & paradimn ct 90 .. both are recommended to test first ? have heard good things abt these ..

Hi just4kix ,

Thanks for your response. I am buying it from UK. Auditioned these

Canton Movie 120MX
Kef 1005
Bose Acousticmass10
Jamo A102 HCS6
Harmon Kardon HKTS9
Boston Acoustics XS

Of all these I liked Jamo, it was too good when paired with 1911. Cost is around 200.

I am not able to audition Tannoy SFX 5.1 but have heard good reviews. Any inputs on this system?

Can anyone suggest good speaker cables?

I had a look at this but not sure what to go for
Speaker Cables | Speaker Accessories | Richer Sounds

Thank you guys. Purchase done finally.

I've got the Jamo A102 HCS6 with Denon 1911 and it rocks .. very happy with the purchase ...

Also the speakers are tiny, looks good too along with being cost effective.

I have the ETC with the Denon 1911 and they pack a good punch. Of course, like all sats I miss out on the mid range but then my preference is Movies and for this, the ETC's Sub woofer is too good. I bought it without a good demo and I love it... The sound is good for movies.

The thread sure has an apt title. Am at the end of my wits now with this AVR and setting it up has been nothing more than a pain in the wrong place :sos: . One of the worst manuals I have ever read. I thought my DSLR was complicated, but the 1911 beats it. The Onkyo was much easier.

Things am not able to figure out

1 - The volume level has to be increased to some insane numbers for proper output.
2 - The treble is pathetic and I am still trying to figure out how to increase this in the stereo mode or any other mode in fact.
3 - Output of sound in the Tuner mode is really feeble.

Any pointers folks ? BTW the rig is

Denon 1911
Monitor Audio Floor Standers
Pure Acoustics Surrounds
Kaiboer HD 1055 plus Media Player

cheers
