Had a level 3 in my system for a couple of days. It is very very organic sounding with a very sweet top end with no grain or harshness. Bass too had massive impact and really went low. However the mid range seemed a wee bit too recessed in my setup. Of course this was in my setup. It might sound like a completely different animal in your setup.

I greatly prefer the Ayon CD-1s to it. It has far superior mid range body and nails the timing while sacrificing nothing in the top end of the spectrum.

Regards

Maybe this is part of the tube world, which is fine. Those who want tube sound, ethos, looks, and so on ...want tubes. Tube amplifiers, maybe pre-amplifiers too.

But a DAC, really, is a source. We don't have tube turntables (OK, I guess there are tube phono stages) or tube cassette decks so, I wonder why tube DACs?

ROC, the one you tried was a Level4. Supposedly the Level3 does midrange very well, that is what Jaibir has.

@Thad: the Lampizators came about from Lukasz' constant tweaking of the analog output stage of a large number of CD players. Essentially, he used to replace the silicon circuitry with various types of tubes. He's not the first to do so, nor alone. Eastern Electric Minimax DACs, Ayon CDPs (iirc), Audio Aero CDPs, many small-time manufacturers from the far-east, etc. He is certainly talkative and it is very educative to read his website.

Thanks every one ,i read about some high resolution DAC,s and another one known as PDX by lehenan audio from australia has been considered to be one of the best DAC,s ,but uptil now nobody compared PDX with lampizator, though in group shootout on killerdac.com/forum out of many DAC,s PDX was considered best sounding with DB labs, tranquilaty SE following behind PDX
Thanks

ROC, if your experience is very_______analogue,than it must be very dark sounding?

Nope. Not dark sounding at all. It was very neutral - what I meant by analog was that it didn't have the usual digital glare associated with very many cd players/dacs.

Thank you for correcting me Dr Bass. So what I heard was the level 4.

Thanks... reading it now. I also remember having come across the name in the context of Slimdevices/Squeezebox.

ROC, Lukasz offered me level 3 1/2 as a special for me and my sound preference is for holographic ,natural emotional musical sounding gear ,i am also looking to buy a SE direct heated triode amplifier for its 3d holographic ,musical sound

what is he charging

i did a lot of ground work for this dac
the bloody shipping and customs costs as much as the dac- so i ended up delaying

however i have now been adviced to use another shipping agent that is a bit cheaper

That's depressing!

Whilst I'm not in the market for a stand-alone DAC, let alone a tube one, as I read of his intentions, his design philosophy, his over-engineered power supplies --- the more impressed I became.

I have a level 3. The dac does not have what is normally associated to be a "tubey" sound. It is neutral with no bass bloat, roll offs etc but does have a very palpable midrange. Its also sensitive to transports although you still get about 70-80% with a cheap CDP as a transport (I started off using a Nad 515). Resolution is very high and you need to hear it with very resolving downstream components to hear what it is really capable of.

Having heard quite a few high end CDPs before and since (including some comparisons), I dont think I will be bothering with a source upgrade for quite some time to come.

p.s. I had gotten mine shipped using EMS (speed post). It was stuck in customs for a few weeks and was quite a pain to get it released. Unfortunately, other shipping services like Fedex etc are disproportionately expensive from Poland (if I remember it was 3x the cost of EMS to ship by Fedex)

Jai,very impressive review of lampizator ,i am also in mumbai ,is it possible to listen to your DAC,Lukasz had mentioned to me about the mishandling of his shipment to India

no gruby
i had not read that

simply because i have no background in electronics
so i do not venture in electronics building myself

i normally have someone assemble the electronics for me while i just build the cab

Are you doing the un balancer?

I require another buffalo kit though ( buffalo 2 though )
do inform me about a sale if you see one

That's what I'm planning on as well. Will let you know when I find out the date for the sale of the next lot(herd?) of Buffaloes. The Unbalancer is one of the options that I may consider. However, I'm not sure if I'd go the way of the Opus or the Buffalo. Let's see...

Are these the 32-bit DACs?
