Starting from the CRTs, the display market had undergone numerous change. LCDs replace the old CRTS and then was the time for the LCD to disappear with the evolution of Plasma and then came out the LEDs now we are going to get the OLEDs sooner or later. So my concern is which is the best tech when it comes to see the tech from a layman perspective.
What about the additional packed features like 3D, Smart apps. how worthy are they?

LCD as a technology is older than plasma but plasma tv debuted earlier than lcd tvs.

The topic has been discussed in many threads in this and other forums. No point barking the wrong tree again. :)

oh, I agree to your point but still we can go for a fresh debate on the same or we can discuss which haven't been discussed so far in this forum.

Hmm. I doubt whether any point has not been rubbed. On fact all points have been rubbed so much that they have become molecules and around. :D

But go ahead, discuss them.

well, Why not have a quick revise to all the discussed point here. i am also eager to know how the recent updates like 3D, smart apps have changed the TV market and what effect does it leaves on a normal buyer who is not known to these tech

I have never understood the hype behind the smart apps.

1. First, they need the tv connected to internet. Only the top end ones have built-in wifi, those costing nearly 100k. For others you need to buy a dongle (extra cost of Rs. 2500) or run messy cat-5 ethernet cable.

2. What is new that is not already not available by laptop?

3. YouTube looks to be best suited but you will need at least 4 mbps speed for hd video.

4. Skype will need camera attachment. Added expense. Besides, here again the pc is better and convenient.

5. Browsing is so inconvenient without the keyboard unless you are satisfied with just one website such as Times of India.

6. Streaming movie services such as netflix are not available.

In fact I have not found any smart app that is really worth. In any case the novelty will soon wear off in a couple of months, if not sooner. In my case, the novelty did not even strike a chord. And I am pretty sure the average guy will not be even aware on how to use the smart so feature. But that's my opinion; others may disagree.

my biggest grouse against anyone paying for the smart apps feature is simple. ...the app environment around you will change, but your TV is likely to last much longer. in most cases if you have bought a TV to your liking, at least for5 years i suppose? can you imagine today keeping a top of the line smartphone for 5years if you are part of the crowd who cares about having a good smartphone ? so why pay for that feature while buying a TV ? just like Samsung and LG's smartphones they won't bother to upgrade the firmware of your TV beyond 1year as they have no business model to keep making money from the app store, unlike apple, who is still updating their 4 year old 3gs with ios 6, or Microsoft who is still doing free replacement of 5year old consoles in case they break down (unbelievable but true, happened with me; i started wondering why then realised they make a bundle from the game developers in each game sold).

its a far better investment to invest in a media player or small form factor HTPC (upcoming NUC platform of Intel) our even a decent blu ray player which is connected like oppo, all these solutions give all that the apps the smart TV gives and more, at different price points of 8to25k, and are far more reliable, perform better and apart from the apps they will play any movie/music format you throw at them ,unlike the dodgy file support of the USB ports of the TVs. and most importantly, when you want to have access to the newer apps/features, simply changing this device will cost very little money if you do it every few years.

So what about the evolution of LED or plasma at the brand level...
Does the brands really make a difference or all r same at the tech level???

Wt a crap - for the amount of time we get to watch TV in this current world LCD/LED/PLASMA make no difference.wespend more time switiching channels than actually sit and watch a damn program
