Hey guys,
I bought the LD650 a few days back for its picture quality and its capability to read HDD so that i can play HD content from USB.

I have downloaded movies and none of them are playing on it.

Does anyone know what video formats does the LD650 support?

^ I have played an MKV clip (720p) that played perfectly, with audio. Only MP4 files play without audio.

Surprisingly the lower specced and cheaper LD460 plays the MP4s with audio. I guess it downmixes the 5.1 audio to stereo but to aam junta without HT aspirations that is a better option.

I just bought a LG 32"LD550 and also tested my MKV movies on LD 32" 460. MKV files were playing on both of them.

Rgds,
Ranjit

^Ranjit, we're talking about the LD650...not the 550 or 460. Different ball, different game...

an MKV file is just a container holding the Video, and Audio and Subtitle files. The Video and Audio codes can vary. Hence all MKV files cannot be played on a TV that supports only DiVX.

As OP mentioned about AVC, which is H.264 (Advanced Video Coding), it may be that LD650 does not support H.264.

@Vandal, the salesmen at NEXT & Vijay sales informed me that LG plays MKV files...hence the comment apart from the models where i tested it personally..650 is the next model above 550...smartness is not a unique gene,i can read the title of the thread...

Have checked the 650 with a few formats. It played all Avi's and a few mkv's. One of the reasons for me rejecting this tv was for its limited usb playback compared to Samsung. It does not recognize files which I have successfully been able to play on Samsung including a 2.2gb Avatar rip.

In comparison the LD460 definitely plays more number of formats but the downside is that it has only 2 hdmi's which is actually quite baffling to say the least.

Now that you are stuck with the 650 I suggest you get a decent Media Player like WD. You could also check out some lower end ones like Transcend Media Player available within 5k. The fact is that you will never be satisfied enough with the usb playing capabilities of the 650.

Thanks for all the comments guys. The problem with the files was that the audio was at more than 320 kbps and hence is not supported by the ld650!
Im also sad that it doesnt support DTS and other new video formats.

Due to some other issues aswell LG is giving back my money and ill be returning the 650. :)

Any idea if samsung has the plug and play capability like the Lg for an HDD ?
Any other models you have in mind? Please suggest. :)
