Hi,
I am planning to buy Sony 32EX-650. It is a FULL HD TV. I use cable tv.

Does this mean that all the channels using cable TV will be upscaled?
Does it also mean that this upscale will cause image issues.

Any idea on how this TV is?

Thanks,

No LED tv should be used to watch cable TV. Please get HD dish. Or get cable only if he provides HD channels. Hathway in Bangalore provides HD channels - 24 I believe

Since the number of HD Channels are less. I rely on cable only. What do you suggest. I thought LED TV works well with cable.

I agree with avmaxfan. If you have a full HD TV, then the best bet is to get a HD set top box - for the best TV watching experience. But since you will get limited HD channels even with a HD STB, it may make sense to invest in a TV that can upscale. As for upscaling, it is a feature in some top line TV models - I know of LG Smart TV since I have seen it at friend's place.

As far as I know, no TV upscales an SD signal to HD. The TV merely adjusts the input resolution to match the native resolution. Unlike that, a BDP or an upscaling DVD player really upscales the SD input to HD via HDMI. If TVs were really capable of upscaling, not many would be ready to pay the premium on HD channels. I can state this with some degree of accuracy based on the dvdp and bdp that i own.

If TVs were capable of upscaling then ever TV's specs would have said so. What some advanced TVs do is smoothing of motion and picture.

True, no TV upscales SD to 1080i. AFAIK no DTH set top box does it either, only Reliance Digital TV upscales all SD channels to 1080i

That's bare bones upscaling. All TVs do that. At the end of the day, only Reliance Digital TV upscales SD channels to 1080i. No TV will do anywhere near as good a job as RDTV HD set top box. Even Panasonic Plasma sets do not make SD content look "good".

So don't worry about upscaling in a TV and get a HD set top box. And if SD quality is more important to you than HD channels then get Reliance Digital TV HD.

Flat panel TVs with analog cable source is not a good choice.. Only the good old CRTs will do justice for the analog cable inputs..

There is no reason not to go for a digital set top box especially when we usually get these as freebies with the TV. Yes, the monthly cost of DTH will be around 300/- or so.. but are really a must to have a basic level of acceptable PQ on the flat panel.

No amount of up scaling on a flat panel will help for SD content on a HD display.. Its all the more apparent once we get a taste of real HD content - after seeing the real HD content one can not tolerate the SD..

Many SD channels are heavily pixellated and look real bad on flat screens but its hopefully a matter of time by when we get plenty more HD channels.

You can get the TV first and if not satisfied with the current cable quality can plan an upgrade at a latter stage at leisure..

I was not aware that Reliance STB is doing upscaling. It is good to know.
