Hi,

I thought of setting up the following Instead of buying a LED TV.

  • LED 20 inches Monitor [ Rs.6500]
  • TV tuner card [ Rs.1000]
  • Speakers [ Rs.500]
Totally put together somewehre 8k to 8.5k.

I want some suggestions from experts.

In addition to the above, is there any device which can be connected to the monitor, then it reads the movies from pendrive and plays on the monitor.

Nice option......But is the viewing angle of dedicated TV the same as Computer Monitor........??

Hi Murugan,

Where will u keep this setup?:p

20" for a computer monitor is ok, but for television is very less.
It would be complicated for a non-techi people at home to operate.

Insted, increase your bedget for some 2k and look out for brands like Videocon, Sansui LCDs not LEDs, which are also 24", enjoy hasslefree watching.

Another 1k you get a nice chinamade DVD player with USB.:clapping:

I personally had 19inch lcd monitor used as TV some time back with external tb tuner box as with internal you end up using more electricity and in case computer gone..TV too gone, with my experience monitor conversion to tv is fine if its short term or second third option as viewing angels as well as colors are not as good as normal tv. these tuner boxes do not enhance image quality as against many TV's video engines, which are built in and then you have to mess around with wires, sound speakers etc etc...so the best option would be to search for TV under promotional offers or so and spend lil etc to get convenience...for example LG 22 inches available at ezone LG 22LE5300 22 inches LED TV - Buy LEDs online - ezone.futurebazaar.com lil less thn 14K. and its 22 inches not 20 :-)

What is your budget for the monitor?
What are your video sources?
Which type of TV tuner card -internal or external?

22" and 24" TVs are available at very cheap rates.

If you do want a monitor, then BenQ and LG has some TV monitors.

Well, I have a BenQ E2220HD and it has two HDMI (1.3) inputs (and other inputs) and tiny speakers.

Just for trial, I connected it with the media player through HDMI and it worked well. Never used it in routine.

Similarly, HD Set Top Boxes (with HDMI output such as my TataSky HD) can directly be connected to these monitors without computer or any internal / external TV tuner card.

These monitors (at least my BenQ E2220HD) have line out also if you want to connect more powerful speakers.

Bought it for Rs.8,700/- in Dec'2010, prices must have fallen by now. Good value, I must say.

Gr8 to see somany friends here..

Let me explain the situation and what is in my mind.

Actually, I have a 20" Onida TV [ Marvel ] which I had some 7-8 years back. My hall is some thing around 19X10 and I have Huge TV stand [ which i had when i was in my earlier house and it suites that house ] and occupies more space in my hall.

So I was thinking of replacing with some LCD / LED tv which can save space for me.

I will not be having my regular TV. I will dispose it with TV Stand [ It is in good condition, not bad ]

I will have a External TV tuner card which can be direclty connected to the monitor using AV input.

Source for this will be my Cable connection and DVD player. If I could get LED TV with HD I might go for some DTH.

I do not mind even I dont have speakers. Anyhow, TV tuner card is going to have audio out which I can use it with a good speaker.

Everything will be set in wall in the hight of 3 or 4 feet height.

BenQ E2220HD and it has two HDMI is available in chennai ?

Pls give me your suggestions

Hi,
I use viewsonic 22"LCD Monitor with Gadmei TV Tuner card for 4 years. Its connected to philips DVD through composite cable. I am happy with it. I dont have TV at my home. We disconnected TV as I have kids at home. We use this set up only to watch a movie once a week. I hire VCDs to watch movies. So no question of HD. The philips have built in amp of 20w rms. Speakers are home made open baffles.
I am more into music so this set up as a secondary set up for use of 3hours/wk is suffice for me. In fact i was wondering whether i should go back to CRT because for resolution of Dvd & vcd, i heard that it is supposed to perform better than LCD At least.

Hi,
Forgot to note your room size. You will need huge TV For that. In view of budget,I would say, stick to CRT & Decrease the viewing distance (this is what i have done because i didnt want to spend much on home video. We sit about 7ft from the screen of 22"). If you are not using anything beyond DVD,Your CRT will give you excellent results. May be you can use the budget to buy a good "easy chair". In fact what we do is we sit on ground and the screen is placed accordingly in the lowest shelf of a book stand. With 2 accident prone kids around (one 4 yr & another 2 year old who are always running around with lots of shouts & giggles) we have kept only the absolutely essential furniture at home.

I feel that in these days of hype about LED,Lcd &High definition, we tend to forget the strengths of CRT(myself included).

We do the same. We watch TV in 5 to 8 feet distance depending upon the time. when we were watching dinner we would watch from 8 feet. other times we will sit before that.

Yes already I have easy-chair and I love to spend my evenings watching some movies.

But I dont know y u say we should have a bigger TV and CRT. already we have lost some 3-5 feets for this TV and 5 or 6 feet for the Dinning table. Rest only for our use.

That is the main reason I want to go for slim one which i can fix in WALL and save some space.

I would post some images of my hall if possible.

Pls suggest.

hmmm,

So what is your viewing distance? I thought that you were going to use the length of the room. If yes, 22" not enough.

What i was suggesting was that either you should buy a big LCD/LED . Bigger the screen, higher the native resolution. It will plays HD video well but wont be good for lower resolution stuff. Personally i cant make myself buy blue ray discs. I am limited to DVDs max. So probably its not a good idea for me to invest in a LCD /LED unless I am going to feed it with material of proper resolution.

OR

stick to present CRT & adjust viewing distance.

By the way, here is an advice from a doctor (I am the doctor): Please dont view TV/Movie when you are eating. Rather Enjoy the food first :)

As I said, I have very less furniture. Thankfully I dont have the dining table occupying any of the rooms. We sit on floor to eat. :)

First let me thank you for your concern. Yes we are slowly reducing it. Some times I will be the culprit who will insist of watching TV while having food. More over we four will have dinner sitting at floor and mostly I will be facing the TV. Kids will be facing us so they dont.

K now to the point

So what is your viewing distance? I thought that you were going to use the length of the room. If yes, 22" not enough.

Am not planing to use the full length for this.

What i was suggesting was that either you should buy a bid LCD/LED .

i dont mind buying a big one, but I personally think big will too much for my hall.

I mostly download movie from net and watch it. there are some sources where you can DL 1080p or 720p which can be good for viewing in 20" LED i belive.

stick to present CRT & adjust viewing distance.

I do not understand this. If I go for CRT, and big one [ 25" ] it will eat up my space.

I thought you already have Onida 20" CRT. I was suggesting that you can stick to same rather than buying anything new.

This tv tuner card thing, while comfortable for me, may not be acceptable to others. This tv tuner in fact upscales the video signals of vcd/dvd to native resolution of my LCD. I didnt even know that for many days. Poor for audio though. Rather than routing audio through tv tuner card, i would suggest to feed audio directly from PC/DVDp to the amp.

Ya Ya. Already I have CRT. But that is the one I want to change. Definitely I would like to change to some Thin ones. How about some Thin CRT which could be for 20" to 25" how it would be ?

Do you say that TV tuner card is that worst ?. I heard from some people it is good? Assume the following situation

  • Am not looking for superior quality for TV channels
  • Let me get some DTH which could be better than cable output and at the same with some HD channel atleast for important channels
  • i use 1080p/720p resolution movies which i can downloaad and watch [ whatever available / No need to watch the movie immediately next day after release. I can wait for some time and watch.]
  • I can have a splitter or something like that for my audio which can be connected to both TV tuner as well as to DVD player?

In the above case whatever I have planned for 8k
[ 20"LED, TV Tuner Card, Couple of speakers with in-built amp and in addition to that, DTH HD or normal ] will be ok or not?

For better clarity I have included the floor plan of my house [ approximate since am not professional ]

Floor plan in 3D

I am buying LG 21.5" LED monitor which has HDMI port...
I want to buy external tv tuner card...
So do we have tv tuner for LED monitor...
Which company is good

A few months back I bought a zebronics tv tuner for my friend. It supports LCD and CRT resolutions. You connect the PC VGA out to the tuner and from tuner to LCD monitor using a bundled VGA cable. I found when connected in this way the PQ of PC display is deteriorated slightly. But for cable tv purpose the PQ is very good. But I would suggest an hd stb like Tatasky+ instead of a tv tuner card. Connect it to your monitor using hdmi cable.
