Hi,

I'm from Chennai. Daily I feel frustrated with the traffic when I reach home from office. It's about 20Kms to my home and it'll take minimum of 60mins to 90mins to reach home. I drive Motorcycle as well as car.

Driving car is horrible during peak hours since you don't know from where people will cross (Especially Auto rickshaws and Motorcycles). I had one minor fracture in my left arm because of auto rickshaw.

I just like to know about traffic in your city and how good your driving in these traffics and how many times your vehicle got damaged?

Thanks.

no use discussing this boy!! its same everywhere.
at best some cities have wider roads or more flyovers.
but no traffic sense anywhere.
mumbai i guess have more concerned and aware citizen than any other part of india but the population pressure is too much for their civic sense to handle not to mention migratory birds with low civic sense spoling the broth.

bangaore, its become pathetic. takes a good 30-45 mins by car to reach my office during peak hours, and guess what, its not more than 5 kms away:mad:

 +1 on a satday evening it took me 2 and half hours to drive from KR Puram to Cunningham road.......... not mention the pathetic traffic and roads were even worseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....... grrrrrrrrrrrrr:mad:

Yep.. traffic is quite unruly in Pune as well. My pet theory - the reason for lane indiscipline and "weaving" is that most people in India grow up learning how to drive on a bicycle and later bike or scooter. Later, when they buy a car, they continue driving their car like a bike. Hence, you will find that lane discipline is a little better in metros where cars are more prevalent compared to smaller cities. Of course, another reason is simply badly designed, badly built/maintained, and narrow roads themselves (especially in smaller cities).

Leaving Delhi aside, I am yet to find a city where roads widen up in turnings (to ensure smooth flow of traffic). If this fundamental design tenet of road design is not even followed, how can lane discipline be expected even from people who want to do the right thing?

We can only feel sad for the Native Bangaloreans, Can It be called a Garden City? It can be called Trafficjamaluru, speedbreakluru or something. With the money & big buildings popping up the once nice city has lost all it charm. Chennai isn't very far I would say.

<rant>
But the traffic planners of Bangalore needs to be praised - Where in India you've noticed an Intersection and signal on a flyover (Richmond circle). They construct bridges to move traffic jams from one place to another (K.R.Puram, Cable Bridge). ORR which is supposed to assist traffic free flow has intersections, Have you guys been on Ramamoorthy Nagar over bridge - An engineering marvel, size as big as of a cricket stadium. During my recent visit my friend who was driving was confused as to which way he should go. They keep planning and building bridges for years together, by the time traffic would have quadrupled and the bridge can't handle any more. I think you can weld wedges all around you cars and bikes to threaten these stupid, moronic, idiotic drivers. Seriously I wouldn't want to drive within Bangalore as well, We should give the city back them :D

End of Rant

Actually you're in a much better position than most people in the world are. :)

Actually, after reading your post I get a feeling you have to improve your driving. That's seriously the best way to get rid of frustration with traffic.

Are you new to driving? I ask because, I have driven extensively in Madurai, Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Of these chennai is one of the best places to drive with well built flyovers, broad roads etc and people also have a lot of patience and civic sense.

Bangalore - Bad roads, narrow roads (even the ones where city busses go), Horrible most speed breakers, one ways everywhere, no alternate routes, full of bottlenecks, very bad planning (flyovers are too narrow by design). Good mannered drivers and pedestrians though.

Hyderabad - Most well built roads of the three, slightly surpassing chennai. People are with pathetic driving skills. You are lucky to return home everyday. Each and everyone behaves like he is the only one driving in the road. :ohyeah:

i drive 64 kms daily - in Pune - total commute time 2 hrs everyday (45 mins inward + 1 hr 15 mins outward) - traffic is one word horrible - 2 dents already in a 3 month old car (courtesy auto rickshaws) - thinking of using the company bus in the future. monthly damages to the tune of 5k - thankfully my sedan returns over 15km/litre since i observe lane discipline, stick to 60-70 km/hour (as per my wife i drive like an old man).

+1 to add to this, how can even one get an idea of having a speedbreaker/bus stop just before and after a signal.......... this is the most ridicules thing in bangalore, speedbreakers on the highway too:eek:, this is really bad planning and no street lights during nights . I guess we have to live with it, it's out fate, and in all the above aspects I like the roads of mumbai.

Well one remotely good thing about riding a motorcycle in B'lore is at least you don't get all sweaty by the time you reach home. Weather.

I paid 9k for my motorcycle(Delhi registration) as road tax, and now everyone tells me that the rule has been abolished and I got cheated. Can I sue the RTO official for this ?

I'm sure you need to pay the road tax when you transfer vehicle although I'm not 100% sure about the amount.

Am I the only one who doesn't get flustered by Bangalore traffic? I hardly find it an issue. In fact I actually find it fun - most traffic on the road is like a course full of slow moving chicanes :P.

A lot of how much pain one has to endure depends on one's car I guess.

Home to office route is 21km, time taken 45 mins max. even did in 37 min once. Secret: I start late to office, after 11 ;) Even though I'm late it saves my energy to work for the day. I kinda enjoy driving at that time as I can rip most of the time ;)
Office to home route is 24km, time taken depends on what time I leave. If I leave at 8 then it'll take 1.5 hours, after 9 it'll take approx. 1hr, after 10.30 it'll take 40-45min and after 12 it'll take only 18-22 mins. Maximum was 2 hour 35 minutes once when there was a very very bad jam everywhere and decided to avoid Inner Ring Road from that day onward.
I looooooooooove Bangalore traffic ;)

I am from Chandigarh and the traffic condition here had been very pleasant until recently. Now traffic is becoming a problem but its nothing compared to Delhi or any other city. With more and more societies coming up and no signs of Metro project coming up soon the situation would be very difficult after few years.

My driving is pretty good (Touchwood) but then the traffic here is nothing compared to other big cities. In peak hours there little jams otherwise its moving traffic most of the time.

How 'bout a traffic signal at the apex of an over-bridge...:D

I agree. Chandigarh traffic was one of the best with huge roundabouts and wide roads. The former I think are becoming extinct in recent times.
I drive about 30 Km in Delhi everyday.

Normal days are still ok but any event anywhere in delhi (Trade fair, Hockey world cup, IPL match, Political rallies, heavy rains) and it screws up everything.
