Hey guys, I need some advice with a tv purchase this Diwali.
I'm looking to gift a large screen tv to my folks this Diwali. They've only now agreed to retire their 29 inch CRT, remain unimpressed with features like 3d and have no interest in smart tv features.
That meant buying the biggest screen available for the best price. I'm sticking with the big 3 because of after sales service reliability. Looked around and culled the list down to two - the LG 50 inch plasma and the 47 inch led LB5610. Since these two are available for 53k and 56k respectively, that's the budget and no more.
I have a plasma tv myself and prefer the picture quality. But I'm in a dilemma over gifting a plasma tv to my parents who have no idea about the break in period that plasma TVs require.
(The first 42pn4500 I received developed pretty bad IR within a week, the second one after just 5 hrs on day one! Took a lot of care during the initial 200 hours with the third set which is now doing fine. But this made me wary of gifting a plasma tv.)

Usage: My parents watch cable tv mostly. Occasionally movies. Dad watches a fair bit of business news through the day. Regular entertainment channels during the evenings. Viewing distance is 12 feet.
I love the sheer picture quality of plasma tvs but am nervous about IR issues or replacement calls ruining the gift. LEDs are hassle free on that count but the picture quality is decidedly inferior, especially with SD content.

Any members who have bought either of these TVs, what would you recommend? I'm unable to decide which one to go with yet. All advice welcome :)

The concerns you raised are true to some extent and why bother risking all that? Just get a plain and simple LED for them which will be hassle free. I am sure they are not videophiles otherwise they wouldnt be stuck with CRT till now! Just gift them something with no maintenance i.e. LED. Don't think about it anymore...Plasma care doesn't make sense for them at all. (On the notion i got about your parents from your post, lemme know if its wrong, then my opinion might change ;) )

Gift the LED. Never knew market had a 47" LED at 56K .

You got 2 TV's replaced due to IR? IR are not even covered in warranties.

Or replacement was due to other reason.

Exactly, even I didn't knew there was a 47 Inch Full HD led 56 k. Damn, we just bough 6600 plasma thinking that there was nothing to compete with it in that price range.

Both the TVs are budget TV and since its your parents who is going to watch, I would say picture quality takes a back seat and go with other comfort and satisfaction levels.

In this case, LED would be the better choice.

Try sourcing Panasonic 50D410 - A no nonsense 50" LED avl at a justified price, will solve your purpose with flying colors.

I shortlisted Panasonic 50 inch A410D and 47 inch LG 5610. Got a quote for both around 60K. Almost finalized to take panasonic due to its bigger size, however when i tried to play movies from USB, i was totoally disappointed with Panny. Out of 10 movies i carried in usb, only 2 got played which was 300MB sample videos. Tried the same with LG and it played 9 out of 10. And finally booked it. It comes with a flexible wall mount and a dvd player with extended warranty. Able to get it for 59.5K without DVD player, which i do not want.

The LB5610 is hassle free, I bought it for my mom as it needs to be simple and easy to use.

The usb is good and I was able to play movies out of a 1 TB HDD. However, support for formats is average. It probably played 5/10 with audio.

Just wanted to post my feedback on this TV.The comparison is going to be between entry level Full HD plasma from Lg of 2014 and Flaghship Full HD LED Tv from Sony in 2013.
The first thing we notice is humongous Size of the plasma when compared to the other TV 950a in our family.

To start with, I will start with the experience of playing the slides in both the TVS.
One word is Damn, Nothing to beat the screen uniformity in a Plasmas
The LG plasma beats the hell out of the 950a is screen uniformity in Blacks, Greys, RGB, Smooth Gradients of Black, Grey and RGB.
But to be honest, I had to pump up the cell light to get the required levels in Gradients whereas in LED I had to bring down the back light level.
Over all, excellent screen uniformity, but in grey scale gradients, I found some colour mismatch in certain bands,
The testing was by playing Dark Night, Avengers and Avatar through PC in Plamsa. The Plasma had a lot of motion judder in this no matter what setting I made. I was pissed of as hell in viewing it.
So we played the same movies through 1 TB HD and here was the surprise. There was no noticeable Motion Judder at all except for some heavy scene where even the best of the best Tvs has trouble. So played out with default setting. The colours were so vibrant and it made the viewing experience very enjoyable and had good contrast ratio.
One thing I noticed was the picture didnt get blurred when viewing fast action scene. The sharpness was very there and real.
Avatar played excellently and never the though occurred that the TV was only 53 k.
W950A
Next shifted to 950a for the testing and it just handled the motions excellent in Clear mode. The setting I have is so life like and sometimes I felt that its really wrong to compare an entry level with a flash ship even though the technology is different.
Motion blur was not as evident as other TVs in the 950a, but evident when compared to plasma, even though its an entry level one.
The 950a also had issues in playing the Avatar and created some tiles in certain scene, but LG just trounced it in those scenes. Felt something to do with deciphering or decoding the format in the Sony I guess.
6600 Lags in
Motion Handling in certain scene Although I used default settings.
Colour reproduction Not so accurate
Calibrating Not my taste, the calibrated image was dull, maybe I am not capable.
Light out put
High Reflections
6600 Excels in:
Sharp images in videos as motion blur was not there when compared to LED
Excellent sound output when played through PC, but not through HD
Excellent playability and handles formats with ease and very smooth fast forwards in player.
Fast browser experience.
Bigger screen Size
Value for money

950a:
Enough has been said everywhere.
King of picture quality.
Very easy to calibrate.
Piece of cake to start calibration when trying out from Cinema mode.
Slow browser experience

Edit: oops, posted in wrong thread.
