Firstly, great forum. It's nice to see a vibrant vinyl and turntable community in India. It wasn't nearly anywhere like this when I left India in the early 90's but then again the Internet wasn't as widespread then to know the extent of interest.

This is my first post so if I am breaking any forum rules then please advice.

I am looking to sell a relatively large batch of LP's (over 500) in India later this year. These are from my personal collection and are either duplicates and/or stuff I don't listen to anymore. I was able to secure some space on a container for a business reason but likely to end up with unused space so am sending along some personal artifacts like these. I am 99% sure that I can send this without incurring any unwanted customs due to the nature of the larger consignment.

Are there any serious buyers in India to purchase the entire lot? Full disclosure - my interests are purely commercial and not altruistic.

I hope to price them fairly. So Rs 500 for common titles/standard reissues and in the region of Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 for mint condition LP's that are relatively more in demand. There's a good mix of Rock and Pop from the 60's and 70's era(Beatles/Stones/Who/Led Zep/Pink Floyd/Jethro Tull/Folk Rock titles etc) to the 90's era (REM/Pearl Jam/Nirvana/10,000 Maniacs etc.). No rarities or collectibles but if there is any interest for Blue Note first pressings then please let me know (these will be at their current market value).

Sorry for the long post... again, if I am breaking forum rules then please let me know.

First, You supposed to post this in sale section.

Second in India, average price per record is about Rs.30 - 60 only when it comes as a lot of 500 records irrespective of titles content. People used to pay Rs. 500 - 1500 only when buying individual title not for a lot.

Also, very few Indian LP buyers chase specific titles. Most buyers are generic buyers, they just want to build collections and hence FM Selvin's estimates are accurate. The most a typical buyer will pay for a record in India is around Rs.75/-

getting that sort of prices in bulk will be tough. if you sell them individually, those prices are achievable, but still very much on the optimistic side.

Since your post is purely exploratory, and not about specific titles, you are not breaking forum rules. Once you have a list, with prices, you'll need to put it up in the 'For Sale' section.

You're not likely to get a forum buyer for 500 LPs as a lot, even for bargain basement prices. You'll need to try record dealers instead. PM me if you want an address or two.

Selling individual records at prices ranging from 500 to 1000 may well be possible, but anything above that is setting your expectations too high. OK, a few classic titles might fetch more, but only a very select few. Keep in mind that most LP buffs already have copies of the usual suspects.

Now, coming to them Blue Notes...

Reubensm- your turntable collection makes me envious, I wish I could say the same for your taste in music! If you know the artists I vaguely referenced in my post, then you would know it's not the kind of crap that people use to simply "build collections". Cheers mate!

Thanks greenhorn and g401fan. I figured I wasn't breaking rules since my post was a broad inquiry.
I do realize that expecting to score a windfall on the entire lot may be a little far reaching. That makes me reconsider the entire shipment if it's not worth the time and effort. But i appreciate the valuable inputs. And I'll reach out to you if I decide to dispose the Blue Notes in India :)

Best regards.

That was tasteless. Sorry.

What Reuben meant was that since all of the bands you mentioned are very popular ..they tend to be quite sought after. Not just because of the music but also just to have a "popular album/band" in their collection. There are lot of people who just collect for the sake of collecting. I'm sure Reuben did not mean any disrespect to the bands you mentioned.

I stand by my statements as that's how the Indian market is. For example, I have the entire Beatles, Floyd, Metallica, GnR, Megadeth, Zep, etc discographies on CD and don't fancy paying 1500 bucks for a record of any of these :)

And for the record if you look up my record collection, I have around 20 Elvis records, 12 Jim Reeves records, over 20 James Last records, 4 Deep Purple records and then there are loads of records featuring Elton John, Humperdinck, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, etc etc, all acquired as part of bulk lots. Wonder if anyone called Elvis and Michael Jackson "crap" before :) and there's another 1300 of them, many legendary performers like Nat King Cole, Billy Vaughn, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc.

No music is crap, what is important to some may not be to others. For example, every Metallica fan like me can't even stand the seeing JT mentioned anywhere :)

I can share more in person, if you drop by down town Dallas!!

You don't have to send it to India if you would get under $1 each, I'll buy it, and you only have to send it to Charlotte NC. Instead send a nice amp with a 220v switch - like a carver tfm 35 or other - which I could trade you for the LP's.

Cool.
srinath.

+1.

What's a tasteful and curated collection to one person may be well be garbage to the next.

+1. It is simply personnel taste. For example Beatles are not my cup of tea. Having few not even played complete album once. Most of the time I skip instruments tracks and I need vocal with good lyrics. On other hand recently I met one gentleman he is skipping Vocal tracks and listening only instrumental tracks. I am happy with my taste he is happy with his taste. Nothing harm.
