Does your laptop have hdmi port ? You can straight away download open elec stable version from their site and install . There are tutorial over there , to install .

Yes, it does. Let me try that. Plan to actually uninstall all unwanted softwares, clean-up the disk and install.

It is an OS for home theater , you need not worry about software which you had in windows.
