Hello there,

Firstly can i start of by saying hello to everyone in this forum, I'm new here and just wanted to introduce myself as david.

I resently purchased a marantz pm8005 amplifier and after about 30 to 35 hours of playtime Im finding the sound very bright, the base adjustment don't seem to do much either, and frankly I'm feeling pretty fed up, as this amp is an upgrade from my old dated marantz that seems that more warmer in sound.

Im wondering if this is because of my also resent upgrade in speakers to the tannoy dc6t se, all in all I'm just not getting the warmth across the board in music. Maybe this combination in speakers/amplifier isn't a good one, which brings me nicely onto my question? has anyone heard/comeacrsoss these differences in sound with this two components?. I mean is it just my old ears not hearing right? If anyone can lend me some good advise or experience on this matter it'll be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks and happy listening :)

Hi there thank you for your reply,

I've tried positioning the speakers and I have them in the best place to my ears. Sound stage is near on perfect. I've tried moving the speakers back to the wall but still sounding bright in sound with most tracks of music.

Even trying another speaker cable can bring out certain warmth.I have few speaker cables and they have reasonable impact on sound.

Hi spirovious

I've actually just replaced my cable with whats known as softer sounding cables. I'm pretty much at a dead end really.

many thanks
david

One last try before calling it quits. Try getting hold of at least 3 or 4 different pairs of interconnects. The component connecting the source to the amp. Try them one at a time giving sufficient play time. Once upon a time I could never convince myself of 'wires' coming into play and completely changing the sound dynamics upside down. Tried once with the ICs and got flabbergasted. This could be it, in your case.

You may need at least 100 hours of play on the amp/speakers to allow for break-in/burn-in before you pass judgment.

hi ghatgepatil,

I'm using very old interconnect so this could be a fix, I'm not aware that this could make a massive difference but I'm going to try. can you recommend any to give me a head start please. and keith you're absolutely right maybe more burn time is needed

thanks for all the help guys

Hey David, welcome to the Forum!
The Marantz PM8005 is one of the most feature laden and good sounding integrated in the market as of today. Kudos on the purchase!
As for your problem; what is your source? Also which amp were you using previously (model)? What speakers were you using before the Tannoys'? Did you use your current speakers with the older amp? How was the match?
Burning-in of audio gear is a controversial topic. IMO, burning-in usually is more relevant to speakers than to amplifiers (exceptions being tube amps which do require certain play-time to fully open up). Speakers have voice coils which may require some amount of time to make the speaker sound more "broken-in". Most manufacturers "burn" their speakers before they are sent to the market, so when you try to burn-in new speakers at home it will take a long time before they become more physically/mechanically burned in than they were out of the box.
Anyway, usually when someone is "burning-in" new set of amps or speakers it's more likely that they are getting used to the sound than the gear actually changing its output signature.
Also, changing the interconnects may not have such a "significant" change to the sound as one might expect. Although there is some merit to using high-quality cables and interconnects, it will only matter most when you have very sensitive speakers and amps, etc.
I recently upgraded my stereo system. I bought the Yamaha AS-500 and a pair of Custom Floor standers (amp first and then the speakers). Initially when I paired my brand new amp to my old speakers, I literally wanted to pull my hair off! It sounded soo bright! The top end was so sharp, it was actually fatiguing to sit and listen for even an hour. Besides the bass was very anaemic. I tried to change the wiring, DAC, etc. but no success. Later I found out that I had hastily attached the speakers in the wrong polarity. Changing it did improve the sound. I then switched to the High gain setting on the amp (but I guess your amp doesn't have that), and things smoothed further.
But what finally brought success was pairing the amp with the right speakers. It took time, but now I have a perfectly matched system that sounds sublime.
I'd recommend you try and pair the amp with other speakers and see if you can get a sound that hits your mojo.
Best of luck! Let us know how it goes!

hi drgb

Thank you for taking the time to help me out with my issue so to speak, ok so my source is the marantz na8005 music streamer connected through dac to my iPhone 6. I'm streaming my music from tidal at full cd quality. my old marantz was the pm4001 which had a loudness button which i miss so much (maybe this is my problum) sadly i never run my old speakers with my new apm. oh and my old speakers where tannoy fusion 3's so I guess that wouldn't make much difference. I think I'm going to try so interconnects and run my speakers in for a little longer. what do you say?
