Hi,

I bought a new Dlink DIR 601 wireless router (150 Mbps) and have a comcast broadband connection with 30 MBps speed. Once I configured the wireless router I had issues with the wireless speed download as I was getting only around 9 Mbps download speed.

I contacted the dlink tech support and they helped me reconfigure and I was able to reach 15Mbps download speed and after they told me that I will not get more than 50% of the actual download speed provided by the ISP(comcast here). So I'm stuck with 15 Mbps download speed with this wireless router. Is it true that I will not be able to get more than 15 Mbps with this router for the internet connection, if not I'm planning to buy a different router which can give me 30 Mbps download in wireless mode. Could you please suggest any other router?

Thanks,
Hemanth

The 30 mbps speed provided by your ISP is the theoretical speed. Check the speeds you are archiving via a gigabit wired connection and compare it with your wireless throughput. If both are the same then there is nothing to worry.

Thanks for your response.

Yes I do get around 30 to 35Mbps using the wired connection.
1. Directly wired to the Modem - 30 to 35 Mbps download speed
2. Modem - Router - Wired to router - 30 to 35 Mbps download speed
3. Modem - Router - With wireless - 14 to 16 Mbps download speed

I used speedtest.net & http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~partha/diffprobe/ShaperProbe.exe utilities to find the upload & download speeds

Syed, I didn't really understand the archiving part using giga wired connection.

Thanks,
Hemanth.

In that case you would need a 300mbps router and capable wireless adapter 300mbps. Btw there are 450 mbps router adapter combination as well.

Another thing, how much distant are you away from router wirelessly? Proximity can improve throughput.

How much do you pay for this 30mps connection btw. ? I do not do serious downloads on wireless, do it on wired, so modem --> switch-->NAS and Switch-->Router is another connection.

haisaikat,
My laptop is very close to the router(around 6 feet) and I did try moving it around, but it didn't help. I use comcast $42 plan which includes internet blast , basic TV and HBO package.

Sorry for the typo wanted to type achieving and the dictionary turned it into archiving.

Basically in a data connection there are two things to be considered how much your router can throw and how much you laptop can catch, in layman's terms. Both effect the throughput which has been limited in this case.

Your router may be capable however if your laptop / computer has a slow adapter you will have limitations. You can update your laptops adapter with a external adapter like this.

Cheaper ones are also available depending on the speed.

You are among the fortunate people for whom the wifi connection speed is the bottle neck. I am among the unfortunate ones who despite having a dual band router (N750) and dual band inbuilt adapter (intel advanced wireless 6230) have a measly 2mbps which squeezes down to 256 Kbps after a few gb of downloads!

I had the same problem when my connection speed difference btw wired and wireless via dir 601 router was 30 MBps vs 13 Mbps. By trial and error I figured out how to set this right. Apparently it was a problem with encryption. All I had to do was change encryption from TKIP to AES( supported by 802.11n ). Now I get 30Mbps wireless as tested by speedtest.net.
P.S- I was all ready to invest in a n 300 router before these last minute tweaks helped.
