After a bit, got some free time today and it was time to take out my Akai GX630D from storage and give it a bit of a run. This deck will be going down to my brother's for a complete overhaul (not that it needs much work but, since its NOS coming out of storage, its better to put it though a complete checks and lubes before deployment on the rack). Here are the pics of the initial run with my elder son taking a look (and listen):

Wow, that pretty neat clean and working too:-)

Who is the PILOT,operating it in Photo

Yes got it in brand new condition. Came with a legacy which is worth remembering. Virtually NOS complete with original packing and a set of tapes.

The pilot at the controls - my elder son, Joshua (aged 6)

Nowadays are reels available for listening?

Reuben,
I have a beautiful Akai Spool Deck Model No M 8. I will post pictures soon. I was not using it for some time and just brought it out from the attic. Really nice sounding with separate amplifiers for left and right Channel and it has original valves in it.

My my, that's a handsome looking deck and pilot :). He is definitely following your footsteps. The legacy continues :).

Cheers...

Yes, he's very interested, just like me when I was his age. I remember as a little boy, my father used to allow me to operate our HMV calypso record player and that started my interest. I used to sit and admire the records play for hours and hours and was intrigued how sound came out through the speakers. Hope the little man follows our footsteps.

Akai used to make some great r2r decks. The M8 has legendary amplification. I was really lucky to get this one in brand new condition. The story behind it is a sad one. The original owner passed away and the equipment (almost brand new) was boxed and stored away for a long long time. It is really quite melancholic reading the little hand-written notes, the owner had tucked away in each of the recordings that he made on this deck. Unfortunately he could not get to record on all his blank tapes. A few of the tapes are still sealed in their cartons.

Sir,

The AKAI M8 is a wonderful spool deck. It has S.E.T tube amps. I have AKAI 1710. They have 8' oval alnico full range drivers. Sounds terrific.

Ok.But in Cal I hvn't seen much.Need to explore in that case.

Reel tape is truly hard to find as reel tape recorders were not as popular as record players. Back in the day, reel decks were very expensive and beyond the reach of even the rich in India. The common ones were the mono portable Grundig tape recorders. The big high end reel decks that made their way to India were imported by the rich and famous (one example is Film star Rajesh Khanna who used to listen to reel tape, regularly in the early 1970s). Hence it is not easy to find reel tape, unless you stumble on a personal collection. My Akai GX630D is from the famous Akai GX600 series, from 1978. The deck I have was imported from Europe, via Iraq (Baghdad) in 1980 (there was a sticker on the box)

I got my Akai M 8 from Trivandrum some years ago and it had everything original including original tape head cleaning solution intact. It has a Phono input and can record directly from the TT to spool tape. It also has a DIN input for other sources. One of my all time 'keeps'.

in the very recent past, I had the good fortune of hosting Mr. Kuruvila at home when he dropped by to pick up my turntable decks for servicing and plinth-build projects. He graciously offered to have his technician service my Akai GX630D reel deck for me (my brother was to do this but can't seem to find the time, these days). I had consulted with an expert, online, who came back saying that one of the motors needs to be changed. Given my knowledge of electronics, I knew that this was an incorrect diagnosis but actually tried to source the motor from abroad. After a visit to Mr.Kuruvila's place and after listening to his NAK 1000 deck, I was convinced that his technician was a brilliant guy.

This morning I was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from Mr.Kuruvila. He sounded really excited and informed me that the GX630D is back to great running condition and sounded really nice. This is indeed fantastic news and indeed, has made my day. I am well and truly in love with turntables and tape decks and its always an exciting experience to have one of these return back to life.
