Hii Guys,

Finally, i (actually, a freind of mine was the main executionist) have made out my DIY bookshelf speaker stand for my new Whrfedales 9.1s. Thought to share with u.

The stand is made as follows:

1. 10mm Acrylic plates (5mmx 2) for top and bottom: top- 10 x 12; bottom 12 x 14 (see the shine and u realise its almost a granite!)

2. Steel pipes- 24'' for mid rib; with 3'' dia.

4. 1.5'' metal spacers as spikes.

The steel pipe has been weilded and sealed with a 4 '' circular plates at both end having provisions for screwing them to the plates. The top plate has a hole of 0.5 inch for sand filing.

The pipe is screwed to the plates via the weilded plates at both end.

The total weight after sand filling is approx 13 kgs

Please follow the link for the pix. Hope u like it. Any coments will be more than welcome.

Very nice DIY effort bluescorp. Pass on the good words to your friend as well.

Do post more pictures (different angle and also with speakers on it).

Also tell us about the changes to sound that you experienced and also why acrylic? How much does acrylic cost 10mm thickness acrylic cost/sq ft?

Thx Guys for the nice words,

well firstly let me admit it is basically the work of my good friend who is a fabricator by profession and a very creative person. While i was seriously searching for stands in Delhi (i am located there) which is hard to get at reasonable price, he came out with such a nice solution.

Choice of Acrylic: Well initially even i was skeptic, but when he showed me a sample i was mesmerised to see the texture, finish, shine and weight (each plate is about 2.5-3kgs). The advantage acrylic had over granite is that its less costly, easily shapable / cuttable, washable, unbreakable and almost as sound dampner as granite is and also very tough.

Quality of sound: Once the sand was filled and the stands become heavier (approx 12-13 kgs) the low fr did lot better job.

Cost: Well, see it was all a friendly gesture from my good friend so actual comercial price (taking care of labour, creativity and profit) will be hard for me to guess, but i actually somehow managed to understand that the materials only would cost in the region of 5k (rem the steel pipe is a 3'' dia and had to be steel-brass finished and is of ver high quality and so is the quality of acrylic! I was lucky he had left overs of some acrylic sheets- for steel pipes, i paid 3500 including the finishes). But i would try to get from him the per unit costs and share with u guys. I think the stands would be on little costly side but looking at the finish and sturdyness i am more than happy so far as VFM is concerned.
Oh just to add the total height including the spacers would be around 28'' which is perfect for my sitting couch.

thx

Rocket Sled,

this are steel spacers of 1.5'' height very sturdy and keeps the stands well balanced. in fact the stands are actually heavy for me to move easily.

Wow, this looks really nice, and very "solid"! My compliments to you and to your fabricator friend. Do you notice any difference in the quality of music with the stands?

Hii,

as requested, some more pix added.

Yes, the sound quality (both sound stage and lows) did improved. I was initially placing them in the cabinet space , just 1m apart. Now they are almost 3.5 mts apart and WOW! the movies sound awsome. The music soundstage has improved lot.

Actually the height (28'') is also appropriate in my case (adjusted to my couch in seated position). Now my AVR (1911) is showing its true power and quality. Really, stands, as i now beleive help to enjoy sound to a large extent.

Meanwhile, i have passed on everyones accolades to my friend-en- designor-en-creaotor who is now thinking to create more creative products.
