My Listening Room

Looks good, I wish there were no wires visible, better gear for equipment placement and flooring carpeted, to make it more cozy and inviting as shivam said ... :D

No I dont think so .... it just sets the mood ..... :D ....... add to this a rocking chair, some booze and you got yourself the best listening one can have ... :D :D

Is the low lighting intentional? Any audiophile benefits?

Yes! You know the way your pupils get smaller to control the amount of light entering the eye? Little known fact: somoething similar happens in the ears. Bright lights cause the ears to close up!

ok, ok, I admit it: that is absolute rubbish, and I just made it up. Or is it? Psychologically, I think there is something that works like that. I hate auditoriums with bright, dazzling lights as much as hate the ones with bad sound.

Dim lights, relax, listen. Sounds good to me :)

Looks very cozy and inviting. I am sure it will be your favorite room once it gets done up.
Oh yeah! Its pretty cozy and already my favourite room in the house.

Getting there sam, small steps one at a time! Right now concentrating on getting the Altecs singing. Then I will worry about the aesthetics!

Looks great.

Just mood lighting, no special audio characteristics!

See the seating pic, there is a rocking lazyboy recliner and if you look a little closer at the table you will see a glass. What you cant see is a bottle of Ardbeg on the floor between the lazyboy and the table. :D

Phsyco Acoustics Thad! Phsycoacoustics!!

Nice setting , like the over all warmth ...

I like the warm lighting even for the living room , but it all changed to the brighter tube lights and daylight cfl , it is tiresome in these lighting ... But no one seem to understand ??

I think we discussed this in another thread (or maybe it was another forum :o) but quite a few of us agree and, even when using tube lights, go for warm-white, which, compares to cold-white has a slightly yellowish tint.

Then there's small, low-watt bulbs. Listening to music or not, it is good to switch to these as the evening progresses. Cold, bright lights keep us awake.

My first preference is Incandescent lights , but these are not energy efficient . Some of the Incandescent , semi transparent one with the appropriate shade , wall reflection ones are good .

Second is the warm CFL with the yellowish tint . My folks at home , friends and relatives visit my home prefer the tube light , they say warm lighting is dull . I am the odd-man out , and could not really do anything about it :(

The tube with the yellowish tint , again it is somewhat tiresome , to some extent it is hard lighting , very bouncy on the creamy/off white wall colors , not very natural to me ..

Philips do some very interesting lighting stuff. I think there is even wifi controlled multicolour bulbs. I think that gets expensive, though.

At the moment, I have just two small (maybe 6 or 8 watt) warm cfl wall lights, which are further moderated by mock-tiffany shades, and another in an anglepoise desk lamp. It is restful, but there is adjustable light where I need it.

But... the fact that I'm not currently listening to music makes this offtopic!

Consider covering as much of your front wall as possible with broadband absorption. It's OK to have reflections in your listening room, but if you can absorb reflections coming from the same direction as your soundstage, then you'll get much clearer imaging.

I had some trepidations for precisely this reason when switching from bulbs to cfl. I really like lighting to be warm. Note that a room can be well lit and still be warm.

I have found that 2700k or 2700 kelvin rated CFLs are a good substitute for filament bulbs and offer similar levels of warmth.

As you are lucky enough to have a dedicated sound room, any plans for base traps, acoustic panels, etc?

First to complete the room, there is still some bookshelves, a Sofa and a rack for the equipment in Phase 2 then panels/traps as needed. The other thing is the speakers are open baffle and reflections are inherent in them. So that needs to be factored in when deciding on panels/traps, So yes, the room will have to be measured and planned for panels/traps but a little later though.

All bulbs are incandescent, with a dimmer attached to the hanging pulley lamp above the seating. I hate tube lights and CFLs.

I was lucky to get a personal preview a couple of weeks ago-being a post lunch session the Ardbeg wasnt offered to me though!

Sorry George, would have loved to offer but didn't have the bottle then. Got it last Friday. There is more on the way around first week of Feb :D.

Raj.
