I need to call it a project cause it may take many years to implement :D

Basically I am looking for a audio setup that can be used to listen to music CDs and if possible be hooked up to my TV for watching movies as well

This is where I am confused - should i plan for a separate stereo amplifier or will the av receiver be sufficient? Is it good to go for a standalone CD player or for a CD/BD combo?

I want to start with a budget of 40-50K and then slowly add the components in time. Based on what I have read in this forum, here are some of the components i felt were good in the range I am targeting

1. Stereo Amplifier - Marantz PM5004
2. CD Player - Marantz CD5004/Cambridge Audio Azur 350C
3. Speakers - Boston Acoustics A26 speakers

HT/AV Gurus, please suggest.

Thanks for the post just4kix! I somehow feel that using an avr to power the FS/BS will not be as good as having a dedicated stereo amp. The use would be 70% music and 30% movies.

The other question that I have is later can i pair this stereo amp with an AVR? how does that work? Do you have to switch off the DAC on the stereo amp?

If you are thinking of going with a stereo amp now and then add an AVR, then I think it will become messy. I think that you can go with a "musical" AVR such as Marantz SR6006 and a pair of fronts such as Focal Chorus 816V or equivalent. Next step will be to add a sub after 6 months. After a year, you can add center channel and surround speakers to complete the 5.1 setup.

hmmm...the Marantz SR6006 retails for 1200$. thats above my budget currently. I would like to pick up an amp + BS speakers + cd player in a budget of 40-50K.

Can you bump up your budget slightly to the Marantz SR4023 stereo receiver? Not only does it have more than double the amp power, but also has a subwoofer output so that you can supplement the low end of your bookshelf speakers in the future.
