Hi All,

Would like to know your opinions on which is best pair among
1. B & W DM 303 with NAD 325 BEE amplifier
2. Tannoy Mercury V1 with NAD 325 BEE amplifier.

My personal interests are classical instrumentals, Rahman, RD Burman, Fusion songs, Indian Ocean, Enrique, Beatles. These are my favorites but I listen to whatever feels good to my ear.

Please let me know your views/opinions.

Thanks in advance,
Sandip

+1 to Nad + PSB

they are proven companions.

what is the price of those mentioned B&W speakers. Tannoy Mercury V1s are budget speakers.

not sure if they should be compared to B&Ws.

Thanks spirovious & AmitKumar for your views.

My budget is 20K. I am getting B & W DM 303 from one of the contact of my friend.

Can you give more details on PSB? Is there any speaker from PSB within my budget?

Thanks again,
Sandip

the Bw's are more power hungry than the tannoys

its something to consider
also its the bottom endoffering from a manufacturer whose only mid to high end offerings may be VFM

i would go with a tannoy F1 or a PSB image B5 instead with a NAD

ofcourse today i would reccomend getting a better amp too

Do you already have that amp?

If yes then skip the B&W the pairing is not even listenable. The F1 goes very well with my 326 and 325 should not be much different. Best PSB speaker in your budget would be the Alpha B1 at ~16.5 with a pairing comparable to the F1.

I personally prefer the F1 over the B1. That does not mean the B1 is a bad speaker. I prefer the comparatively sharper lower mids of the F1 above the bassy lows of the B1. The treble on both of these is comparable is a matter of personal taste. The tannoy is sharper and a touch intrusive. The PSB is sweet and more listenable for longer duration.

So there is no clear winner here. If you can stretch your budget a little then the Image B5 that magma recommends is a clear winner above both these. The bass is "just enough" the mids are defined and crisp, and he highs are detailed without being as edgy as the F1 or as rounded as the B1.

So as all other advice comments, listening yourself would serve you best.

Yes. I own NAD 325 amplifier. Both speakers are not in my town so can't go for audition. Will check if I can get audition of PSB in town.

Thanks,
Sandip

You are in Pune right? We can go and audition the PSB together. Rohit of Lakozy Pune (The distributor for PSB and NAD) is located in Shukravar Peth behind Mandai. He has the B1 in stock and also had a brand new B15 old stock (Magma may comment on how they compare as he has owned a B15 before).

For Tannoy the dealer is Sound n Vision on East Street.

Matches made in heaven:
B&W + Rotel
PSB + NAD

You can't go wrong with either of the above. From what I hear B&W sound best with Rotel not with NAD or any other amp. I have heard Tannoy with NAD and even though they sounded great I understand they might sound even better with CA.

Tannoy also available with AV Xellence on Dhole Patil Rd.

I'm in pune over the weekend

Let me know if you have a listening planned on saturday

Hi Everyone,

I would like to share my experience with NAD + PSB. I got a chance to listen PSB Alpha B1, PSB B6, PSB B15.

First of all I would like to tell you that I am a newbie to HIFI. I never had listened to HIFI systems before.

PSB Alpha B1 - I didn't like these speakers a single bit.
PSB B15 - These are good with low volume but as volume increases, it sounds brighter.
PSB B6 - It is winner among these three. It has good vocals but lacks punch. I felt like that. It will cost me around 34K which I don't think right price for it. Its my opinion.

I heard a lot about NAD + PSB, so I might have too much expectation from this combo.

Let me know if you have experienced similar things.

Thanks,
Sandip

Audio is a very subjective thing. And do not blame yourself for being a newbie. Everyone of us is at some stage. Whatever sounds good to you should be bought. No compromises.

Personally the B1 and the B6 are completely different speakers. the later costing twice as much notwithstanding. the alphas are definitely bright lot but they also do other things right at the price point which makes them so popular. The mids are clear with a forward soundstage, the lows is where it loses a bit for me but compared to other speakers in the league its definitely acceptable.

The B6 is completely different story, I am not surprised that you did not find it punchy as its not. Its a nicely mellow transducer. The bass has definite weight, but no body, If you like body or presence look elsewhere, may be a wharfedale (In the same budget that is)?

So what are you planning to listen next?

Hi ruenigma,

I am looking for Tannoy. Magma suggested me to try Tannoy. I don't know if there is any dealer in Pune. Will search it. If you know, please send me details.
I was expecting you on yesterday.
I am planning to listen Quad. My friend own it.
About wharfedale , I would like to listen it but on same page, don't know where to go?

Thanks for input. Hopefully after listening other speakers, I will get some conclusions.

Sorry about sunday, saw your message late night :(

Tannoy is a fabulous choice, even the entry level Tannoys are very musical creatures. Do give them a listen. Sound n Vision on east street and AVExcellence on DholePatil road (Akshay Complex) have the Tannoys. I'll suggest you carry the 325 for auditions,

No one in Pune carriees Quads AFAIK. Wharfedales are with Aquarius on East Street, very nice staff at both AVX and Aquarius, not that friendly at SnV :) .

To make up for Sunday, I'd love to join you at your friend's place to listen to the Quads if you and your friend don't mind. And also would be glad to host you to listen to my PSBs and Paradigms at my place. Will call you in a while.
