Knowing that its a new product i have asked you guys for the review as i had already made up my mind to buy an Xtreamer Side Winder with USB Antenna.
Link : Welcome to Western Digital US Online Store

This is expected to release in India by Dec end it seems. Price is 9999 Rs. So i thought before buying Xtreamer i can compare the specs of WD TV Live Hub with Xtreamer. Please help me out on the same..

I have two queries to be put forward..

  • Specification reads HDMI 1.4. Will it be backward compatible? Bcos my TV supports only 1.3.
  • If the content that am going to play is DTS HD or Dolby HD then will it downmix to DTS or DD respec? Bcos my AVR doesnt support HD audio..

My req:
To play movies with DTS Or DD through Optical.
Internet streaming as i have WiFi router at my place.
Should play the basic formats..
Audio should be downmix to DTS or DD in case of HD..
Should support HDMI 1.3

Thanks in advance

I doubt that it will be sold for Rs9999 in India.
I was just about to order it from the US when I saw this email. Just canceled the payment process, as it would have cost me significantly more by the time it reaches Bangalore. I will wait for a couple of weeks and jump at it if it is sold for anything below 15K here.

Xtreamer Side Winder fulfills all the requirements.. sometime back it was listed on ebay for 8.5K including wi-fi antenna .. as of now it is selling for ~9-10K due to limited stock..

WD TV Live Hub has an advantage of 1 TB storage.. So if it supports downmix and backward compatible to HDMI 1.3 then it is better to go for WD..
Anyways we will have to wait for both the cases as Xtreamer is also out of stock in Xtreamer.in (N.V Trading)..

Cheers

WD TV Live Hub is an good option.
The only thing that is not present is the WiFi support.
you need to purchase a separate USB adapter.

It only has a Ethernet port.

hi all,

I just got WD TV Live HUB. I got it from US thru my friend. It cost me $199. First usage experience is very good, sleek UI, No nonsense inteface. I could play ripped DVDs and downloade videos.

I have some .flv files downloaded from youtube using some downlaoder ( I don't remember). Those files are not played by WD TV. Any pointers? Is it problem with downloader or with firmware?

WD forum has mention from many people that they could play youtube downloaded files( .flv)

I don't think WDTV has direct support for flv files.

You can try using FLV Extractor (google it) and demux the files and then remux (merge with mkvtoolnix )it to get an MKV and you can play it.

If you demux it - you may find it could just be a h.264 or it could be an avi/mp3(chances are low quality).

Open the file and see what codecs are used and we can go from there.

good luck

Any news on the Hub's availability from WD in India ? As per the news release it was supposed to be available from Dec onwards for a price of Rs 10K.

Who is the WD dealer/distributor in Bangalore where from the Hub can be sourced ?

I don't think it has been released and that might not be the price. Many Indian tech websites tend to act as reviewers by merely copying the content from US websites and regurgitating that in a local patois.

The price was a conversion of the original US average release price of $225. You can expect it to be at least Rs 12K-13K.

How did you copied the initial data to the internal harddisk?

Spoke to Computer Shop guy (Brigade Road) yesterday and he quoted INR12400 (all inclusive) for the WD TV Live Hub. :(

I wrote to WD folks directly (Mr Khwaja Saif - Sr Director, Sales WD Dubai who was quoted @ the launch press release) about the price announced @ launch and the price dealer (not sure if Computer Shop is an authorized dealer for WD though!) is quoting and he directed me to Mr Srinivas Sampangi. I'm yet to hear back from Mr Srinivas.
