Hello,
After spending a considerable time in comparing various technologies and browsing through forums i decided to get a plasma panel. Guys please help me out in making the right decision.I need a 42-incher for my room. I haven't checked any Panasonic models yet and i have only checked Samsung plasmas 42D450 and 42D490. They seem quite good. Now please help me shall i go for Samsung or are there others good offerings from Panasonic or other companies. I need to have the best PQ and good format support via USB and ability to play mkv and mp4 via larger HDD's.
Please share your suggestions. I will be purchasing this weekend so please help me out ASAP. Thanx

I think these are the best bets in this price segment, the 43 inch plasma I forgot which one of samsung but I saw one last week in Kolkata for 39K. Check the LG plasmas at the same segment which have the options to have extended purchasable warranty. PQ of Samsung I think is better than LG. Pana ones are costlier.

I cannot get a demo of Pana U30D. So, i have yet to decide between Pana and Sammy. Whats your say guys? If PQ of Pana is better than Sammy than i will definitely go for Pana as it has a full HD panel and 3 year warranty. Can anyone tell me about its codec support (U30D)?

What do you mean Codec support? If you mean in Network mode via DLNA, it will support MPEG, MP4, AVCHD. Go to DLNA website for more information or download the Panasonic manual for support video formats.

Samsung should not be bad at all, but panasonic is excellent. Having used panasonic plasmas for almost 10 years now and comparing with LG used for 2 years - there is a world of difference in terms of picture quality, build quality.

Sorry, i meant the format support. I had a demo of D490 today. It supported and played everything i threw at it. But i heard somewhere that Panny U30D doesn't support HDD's and doesn't play mkv larger than 1.5GB. If that's true, i am going for the Sammy D490 today itself.

If your budget is 50K then I suggest buy the panasonic which sells around 40/43K (not sure which one) and use the remainning 6 to 7 K for a dedicated media player and interconnects which way you will have full media playback support. Panasonic does support Divx HD but USB playback I have never tried myself. I suggested you a samsung because I have personally viewed it and at 39K I think a 43 incher is a deal. If you want a reference plasma then those of panasonic cost higher.

panasonic still has 3 yr warranty for plasmas.
42U30D is full hd and should be approx 40-44k, so that's the best option you have in your budget.

panasonic supports a lot of formats via usb/external HD. there is no limit on size.

size is not an issue... i have the 42X30D and it reads my 2tb external without any problems... it has played 18GB mkv file without problem

i've noticed that for mkv files video is usually supported but audio support depends on the codec used. i use hdmi connection from laptop to play those files where audio is not supported.

If your planning on watching alot of SD channels then the Samsung models are better coz they upscale SD better then the Panasonic ones. but if you watch alot of 1080p movies then the 42u30 is hard to beat at that price. Its full hd, but not that great when viewing SD channels as compared to sammy.
Panasonic is known for their plasma tvs but only the higher ones like st,vt,v,gt... the ones with neo pdp ,and infinite pro. Also Samsung has 2 year extended warranty provided by the service guys, cost about 3k. contact your nearest Samsung service center to confirm.

Samsung is known to play a wide variety of codecs through USB . I dont know much on Panasonic, for this ask any pana users!

Thanks guys for the replies. I know panny has an edge over Sammy in full HD playback but most the time my family will be watching SD channels on it. Also there is no stock of P42U30D in about everywhere i searched. I called up panasonic too, they gave me some dealers contact numbers and everyone is saying that U30D is not available. So whats you say? shall i wait more or go for the Sammy one?
