Netgear's new Nighthawk router doubles as a Plex server

Nice, but for $500 you could assemble a decent gaming PC.

Synology has a router that also works as a NAS and now this, interesting times indeed.

I have been planning to set up Plex Cloud, just have not had the time yet. It uses Amazon Cloud Services, and lets you dispense with all local PCs for both storage as well as transcoding. Everything is done in the cloud, both transcoding as well as storage, and you can watch on any device with the Plex app.

^^ I think you can do that with any SaaS model, I have tried MS Azure and Skytap, but just as demo, getting a virtual lab on cloud is really expensive. (for now atleast)

Amazon Cloud costs $60 every year, and offers unlimited storage.

I'm yet to play around with it, but I'm assuming it will also handle transcoding so basically you are entirely in the cloud for both storage and streaming.

At least that is how Plex is advertising it.

mmm looks interesting, I read couple of articles, but it would not allow uploading your own collection, at least that's what one of the articles said.

I could not find this 60 USD unlimited Amazon Cloud service, can you pass me the link for the same.

No, it does allow you to upload your own collection and even stream it, though I'm not sure how they will differentiate between genuine owners and pirates.

If and when it moves to other cloud services, it's going to definitely set the cat among the pigeons, especially where Hollywood and the music and movie entertainment divisions are concerned. But it also offers unlimited streaming of your own content at a budget and that can be accessed on any device with Internet connection.

Of course you can do this with your own home-based server like OwnCloud or Synology, but you are no longer tied in or limited to the upload speeds of your home ISP.
