Hi guys,

Just unpacked my brand new Onkyo hts 300 .

I am not getting 5.1 sound.

I have connected my wd live media player via optical out to the receiver.
I have also made the adjustment in settings for the media player to pump out digital signals and not analog stereo audio.

If i select speaker a i get only front channel stereo

if i select only speaker a i get only rear channel stereo.

if i select only speaker a+ b setting i get same front channel stereo.

i have selected the tv all channel listening mode.

please help or connecting via hdmi is better advised?

Did you check for the inputs in the AMP? Try the digital input option on the AMP. You should see COAX,OPT1,OPT2 options. Only speaker A should be enabled in the AMP. Also check for the proper connection of the OPT cable between WDTV and Onkyo AMP.
Cheers!

I have enabled speaker A for 5.1 and now got an hdmi cable as well but the same problem persists.... i thgt that its coz of mu optical cable but now with a new hdmi cable i have the same issue... don knw what to do...

@partymonger.... i have tried atleast 6 movies.

The receiver does recognize the input as 5.1 when i check the display button. s

4 ac3 dolby 5.1 tracks and
2 5.1 dts tracks...

same results.

Update : i reset the receier to factory settings as per the manual but still no luck !!! I AM Beginning to tear my hair out now. :(

Here you said it recognizes as 5.1 !

Check the wdlive settings, have you enabled it to downmix from 5.1 to 2.1 ?
Try and see.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes it does recognise the 5.1 dts or dolby 5.1 tracks as the input source .

(i have used hdmi as well as optical and checked this)

the only audio setting available in wdlive is either digital or stereo mode

i have selected digital for it to send down the signals via hdmi or optical.

now my problem is even more peculiar

i paid close attention when i select speaker mode "a" which is 5.1 output for the receiver and i get only rear channel activity.... its not 2.1 stereo as there is no dialogue that bleeds into it. the front and center r silent and there is no sound in it... only the surround 2 speakers remain actve

when i select b.... the surrounds shut down and i get 2.1 stereo mix sound from front 2 speakers and sub... no center again. :( :( :(

Jai, take some logical steps to isolate the issue.

Use HDMI for connection.

1. You are saying the receiver is displaying that it is receiving full 5.1. That mean that the incomings signals are in bitstream format.

2. Now using the setup option, go to speaker set up, and run a test tone. Ensure that do hear the test tone from all speakers including the sub.

3. If this does not work, there is something wrong with the way you have set up the system.

4. If it does work, then you have to go to the source in the receiver setup, and choose HDMI (1,2, or which ever one you are using) as the option for audio. Many receivers have a separate option for audio and video source set up.

Don't tear your hair out. It is easier to repair electronics. You CANNOT grow your hair again.

Cheers

@venkat...

i got everything working now.... thanks to ur advice.

it was a goof up with the wiring.. i had not plugged in correctly...
i just did a demo of the opening car chase scene of quantum of solace and i was blown away.

Hi Jai
One quick question
you said that you have a movie with dts5.1 and the receiver was able to identify it as dts?

If i am not wrong wdtv live only passes 2 channels of dts to the receiver
Were you able to get 5.1 surround sound for this movie?
What are the settings in the wdtv live and the receiver that i have to choose?

Please do reply

Thanks

WD one also can output 5.1DTS/DD files. It is analoge which is downmixed stereo, not digital out.

guess buddy i got your problem.. chk the speaker connections at the rear.., they aren't connected properly or they are connected to wrong ports.. coz u stated after selecting A or either u get seperate sounds that shud not happen.. chk the speaker wires again>

hook them properly as per the diagram and colour codes given and that shud do it..
