Hi friends,

There is a weird issue when I use the Pioneer bdp 180 player for playing cd's or using the usb to play songs via pen drive. If the TV is on, it plays the tracks continuously. But with the TV switched off, after approx 2 mins of playback there is no audio. Switch on the TV again, the audio comes back. The Pioneer bdp 180 is connected to the Marantz SR 7011 avr via hdmi cable. Checked with another spare hdmi cable & the cables seem fine since the issue still persists in the same scenario.

Now if I connect just a RCA or an optical cable from the player to the Avr, the audio plays fine with the TV off without any issues. Is this an issue with the hdmi port in the avr or bdp or is this the way HDMI works ? Thanks in advance for any headsup.

Rgs.

I do not think it is related to cable but something is going on with HDCP content protection. Please check in Marantz if there is any setting that says Play Even If Target Device is Off. You may not find this literally but something similar.

Please check for something related to CEC and read over Internet too.

Check this, the solution is hidden somewhere here.

Thanks a lot for your reply Bornfi. I will check the CEC issue & see if it mitigates the problem. I totally agree that the cables are fine. Pardon my ignorance, but is the CEC issue pertinent to audio tracks on audio cd's too ?

I am not very thorough with this but more than content, it is about the limit of control HDMI has over connected devices.

This looks like a HDMI CEC issue like what @bornfi is presuming. In that case disconnecting the HDMI cable will prevent the TV's CEC from interfering with your HD player.

Thanks a lot Bhangui ji. I will try that.
The Pin 13 in the HDMI cable is used for CEC. You also get CEC blocking adaptors that basically has pin 13 disconnected. So your BD player can use such a HDMI cable which has pin 13 disconnected. It will allow you to display movies, etc on the TV without using CEC.

It is also possible that your BD player has a faulty CEC implementation and expects a signal on pin 13 when output is on HDMI. It is also possible that your BD player has an option to turn off CEC in the settings menu. TV settings usually have option to turn off CEC. e.g. I turn off CEC on my raspberry pi devices from turning on my tv automatically when I power on my RPI.

I will try switching off the cec from the bdp, then avr and tv accordingly to troubleshoot the issue. Hopefully this should resolve the issue.
