I have connected Asus O!play mini plus via HDMI to Sony KDL-46HX850.I am getting sound on an mkv file with 2 channel aac but i am not getting any sound or very little sound even on full volume when I play any file with 5.1 audio. There is no avr or ht system involved.
The mp4's with 5.1 played perfectly via usb play on my tv.

Well, there is no certain reason, it might be the damaged file, or basically there might be issues with the player in playing AAC-MP4 files, which is very common, I would rather advise you to convert it to an mkv through Media Coder(Free Download) and check if it works.
Also, try the optical out, and since your file has 2 streams, try the 2-Channel audio stream.
