Hi,

I am looking for the largest possible non-smart 2D LED TV. I don't want a 3D or a smart TV because I hate to pay for features I don't plan to use . Budget: around a lakh or so, stretcheable. Unfortunately finding a 50inch tv became difficult, leave alone larger sizes.

Perhaps I should just fall in line and go for a smart 3D TV :indifferent14:.

Any advice will be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Lol...I don think you'll get that large a tv without Smart features...atleast not now. But, you might get one without 3d...just might...good luck

What features you may not find useful today may become useful to you tomorrow. So don't spend all that money and regret after a year that you should have got a smart / 3D tv in the first place. If your gonna make a 1 lac investment you'd wanna future proof yourself. Just my advice/opinion.

Thanks, guys.

I am not sure whether I'll use either "smart" feature or 3D in next several years. But considering that no brand is selling a model without them, I might just have to settle by paying the premium for unused features.

I hardly use the smart features of my TV. 3D? Sometimes - as I have a few 3D BDs. But I still purchased ST50 for the quality it offers. That was my sole criterion.

why don't u get the Panasonic 50e6d...worth every panny n should be large enough for u n has got brilliant review on PQ n does have the 3d...n extremely VFM. I mean the 32" model is...so I am sure the 50" would be too. Why do u wanna pay a premium for Sony/sammy LEDs n that too most would come with 3d in this range, which u don't require.

I too have finalized the panny 32e6d over the equivalent sony 32w670 after lots of deliberation...due to its sheer PQ n 3 yrs warranty n most of all VFM factor.

If u don't have an idea about this model...go to the Panasonic UK site n check out the awards section for this tv for the various reviews from whathifi etc.

Check out this review, it says it all - http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Panasonic-TX-L50E6B-E6-LED-LCD-Television-Review_482/Review.html

the 32" model of the same has got 5/5 stars from whathifi which comes with IPS panel though great PQ but was criticised for less then stellar black levels...though not of much concern.
This same model with a 50" screen comes with a VA panel best known for top notch black levels. So it's like this particular tv would be 6/5 stars...I would've bought this one if I had the budget.

Looks like I'll put this on hold. I'll probably go for upgrading my stereo amplifier at this time.

I haven't been able to find time to review any models in shops yet. I did look at a lot of information on the web. It's confusing. I'll post my observations in any case. Most likely I'll revisit again in 6 months are so.

1. There is very little 3D content available as of now. 3D blu-rays it he only option. 3D blu-rays are available, although are in the premium price range. The other option is to buy a 3D camcorder and use the 3D TV to view personal videos in 3D format.

2. For any manufacturer will 3D glasses continue to be available for current models when they go old? Is the communication protocol between 3D glasses and TV stable enough and well-defined.

3. 3D blu-ray format seems to be stable. So no worries there. Similarly the HDMI format is stable, so the compatibility between 3D TVs and 3D camcorders shouldn't be a problem.

4. SmartTV features are great. However SmartTV platform is still being stabilized. Network/HDD/internet streaming player versus smartTV debate still is not conclusively in favour of smartTVs.

5. I currently use my programmable sony remote for all AV equipment. It doesn't have a trackpad or a similar motion detection touchscreen. There is no programmable remote with smartTV remote programming capability to upgrade it. So I'll have to interchangeably use SmartTV remote (for TV functions) and existing sony remote (receiver volume control). That'll be a pain.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Will post again when I re-evaluate.

Well i was looking for something in similar line few months back in led....however i settled for LG 47ln5710...which is 2d smart tv.....i think Major brands non smart non 3d tv comes in maximum of 47 inch...For ex..lg ln5400...samsung f-5100 and in sony too...

Non smart TV in higher sizes with good PQ is really not there.
Have been using the Panny 42E6D for the bedroom. Beautiful! Wanting to get the 50" for the living room.
Only one or two niggles. No analog audio out or headphone out so cannot connect to stereo.
Three HDMI connections against the standard 4 in Sony & Samsung.
But go for it. You should be able to get the 50" for around 80,000.

Can you please tell me about the viewing angle and PQ of this tv.More detailed review will be very helpful.

Does it support 1tb hard disk?

Can u post some pictures of your tv?

I have a 32 inch sony LCD(no problems till now and i am satisfied with sony) but now planning to get 50 inch panasonic :).I have a doubt whether panasonic LED'S are reliable.Never used any panasonic appliances before so i have no idea about the brand .Please give your opinion.

In my opionion, you should not worry too much about the viewing angle. Narrow viewing angle in case of LCD/LED is overstated point (just as image retention in case of plasma). No one will watch TV from acute angles even if the viewing angle is 180.

There is a long thread on the Panasonic E6 on the forum. No offence but its always better to look around before asking.
Yes, it supports 1 TB HDD.
I did take some pictures but with a mobile. Not posting them as they are not very accurate and would give a wrong impression.
The PQ does start to deteriorate at around 30 deg off axis viewing angle but I would say it is very much watchable even at 60 deg angle. I would not be very much concerned about this. It would be similar for all LED/LCD TVs. Only plasma will give you wide viewing angles with no deterioration.

Last year's budget was taken by a NAD amplifier. After enjoying it thoroughly for an year, upgrade bug has bitten me again. So it's time to search for a TV again.

My requirements haven't changed in the sense that I still don't care about 3D or "smartness". PDP is not an option as most manufacturers have stopped or are in the process of stopping them. Given that there are really no large TVs without 3D or smartness, I have accepted to pay for those features. Most probably 3D will never be used. "Smart" features might be. Perhaps my daughter will learn how to search for Oggy and Cockroaches on youtube :).

A new feature that has come up now is 4K. Since not much 4K content is available and is likely to be available in near future. This doesn't matter. I do use my TV for editing photos from my DSLR. A 4K TV will be useful there, although considering the high cost of a 4K TV, it's best to not buy it.

I would like to stick to global manufacturers, except Phillips (2 bad devices are enough for a lifetime).

I browsed a few TVs in a few shops. Most of them play some DTH channel. Comparison of different TVs is not only difficult but is largely dependent on how they have configured them. On top of that they don't have readily connected Blu-ray players, so my test BDs were wasted.

Coming back to HFV forum - Most people's opinions on HFV forum are very subjective. So while they are valuable, they also lead to divergent views. So seems like it's better to study more on the web and then browse again.

Here are few parameters that matter.

1. Screen size
This is of course most important. No feature beats size. Looking at prices of various models on http://snapdeal.com - 50inch seems to be a size where prices kind of stabilize and then rise rapidly. 55inch TVs are 30% or 40% higher priced in many cases. So looks like 50inch is a good choice for someone with a lakh or so budget.

2. Refresh rate
This is important for action movies. Most DTH operators don't have high enough bit-rate to make a difference. Interested folks can refer to my postings in DTH section of HFV, where I have posted bit-rates for various channels from various operators. At least 100Hz is required.

This website tells you about refresh rate. https://www.rtings.com/info/what-is-the-refresh-rate

3. Sound
No TV can possibly beat my home theater's sound. So this doesn't matter.
Having an optical or digital out will be helpful just in the case of using TV for browsing youtube etc.

4. Aspect ratio change
It doesn't matter much I set tatasky to always output 16:9 even for SD channels with vertical black bars on both sides. Sometimes SD channels have 16:9 video with black bars on top and bottom. So to prevent black bars on all sides, I have to set TataSky not to add vertical black bars and then set the TV to vertical zoom.

5. WiFi versus ethernet
WiFi makes life easy, although it's possible to lay down an ethernet cable as well in a few hours. WiFI Direct is useful for streaming movies or photos from a mobile. Doesn't matter much since I only rely on my faithful DSLR for good quality images and print them, seldom watch them on TV. I don't shoot video.

6. Support for movie formats
Again this matters only when browsing the web or a home video server. Youtube is all I care about. I don't keep movies except in BD/DVD/VCD form. So doesn't matter much.

7. Remote
A regular remote can be programmed into my programmable remote making life easy. A touchpad remote can't be since my programmable remote doesn't contain a graphics touchpad.

8. IPS versus TN.
In-plane Switching is obviously better. Check wikipedia IPS panel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

9. Price
Can't forget this .

Considering these and looking at snapdeal. I have shortlisted these TVs ->
1. Sony KDL-50W800B
My experience with Sony products has been excellent. I have used a Sony programmable remote for 8 years. It's still running fine. My Sony BD player has also been very good and is still in a mint condition after 6 years. They are costlier, though. I guess much of that has to do with Sony brand :).

Screen Size 50 inch
Motionflow XR 400 Hz - Translates to a 100Hz refresh rate.
Sound 1 Digital Audio output is provided at the rear.
WiFi, WiFi Direct and Ethernet capability.
Many aspect ratios are supported. Doesn't explicitly say 4:3.
3D feature Present with 2 glasses provided.
Remote - non-touchpad.
Movie formats - all I can think of.
Skype ready, internet video capability.
Doesn't say IPS.
Rs. 107740 on snapdeal.

2. LG 50LB6500
My only experience with LG has been mobile phones - both of them worked very well until I decided to upgrade for features. Overall I believe they are reliable in TV space as well.

Screen Size 50 inch
LG website honestly says "Dynamic MCI (Hz) 500 (100Hz)". :clapping:.
Sound 1 Optical Digital Audio output is provided at the rear.
WiFi, WiFi Direct and Ethernet capability.
All aspect ratios are supported.
3D feature Present with 4 glasses provided.
Remote - non-touchpad. Supposed to operate other devices also.
Movie formats - Some confusion there, though H.264 which is the most important of the lot is present..
Skype ready, internet video capability.
IPS panel.
Rs. 98499 on snapdeal.

3. Panasonic TH-50AS670D
I don't have any experience with Panasonic in the past. However a lot of AV magazines have praised panasonic TVs.

Screen Size 50 inch
Panel drive 1200 Hz BLS IFC. This translates to 100Hz or 120Hz.
Sound 1 Optical Digital Audio output is provided at the bottom.
WiFi and Ethernet capability.
Aspect ratios are not mentioned.
3D feature Present with 2 glasses provided.
Remote - Touchpad and non-touchpad. Great so I can continue using existing programmable remote alongwith a touchpad remote, for browsing.
Movie formats - All supported.
Skype ready, internet video capability.
IPS panel.
Rs.94570 on snapdeal.

4. Samsung 50F6800
My current TV is a samsung. Has run very well since last 6 years. Absolutely wonderful and troublefree. It's 32inch which is why I am looking for an upgrade. My samsung mobile also had an uneventful and successful run. I trust this brand very much.

Screen Size 50 inch
Clear Motion Rate 500Hz. This translates to 100Hz.
Sound 1 Optical Digital Audio output is provided.
WiFi, WiFi Direct and Ethernet capability.
Aspect ratios are not mentioned but given that my much older samsung has all possible aspect ratios, I am sure this one also has them.
3D feature Present with 2 glasses provided.
Remote - Only Touchpad remote provided.
Movie formats - All supported.
internet video capability. Skype ready.
IPS not mentioned.
Rs. 121701 on snapdeal.

I am inclined to buy itonline as vendors anyway aren't willing to help me with testing using BDs. I have never bought from snapdeal. My past experience with flipkart, amazon and myntra has been excellent.

Any suggestions or advice will be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

well askii2 you have certainly done your homework.IMO i would suggest you go for the sony because AFAIK sony tv's offer the best PQ amongst the lot, however if for some reason you do not want a sony, you can buythe panasonic too,the 670d is a new model with IPS panel so no issues there.i have the 50a410d which is non smart and non 3d model because i hardly ever was gonna use them.panasonic was the leader of plasma panels and many plasma fans on our forum can attest to the fact so i dont think they would make any compromises on the quality of the LED tv's.when i bought mine the sole criteria for me was the screen size of atleast 50inch which no other manufacturer offered me w/o the usual smart and 3d features,i like the sony too but it was a little out of my budget.hope this helps!

Upgrade bug was nearly killed when everyone in my family opposed the move . Grown-ups thought 50inch was too large. Daughters didn't fall for "chota bheem will become mota bheem" :).

So suddenly a smaller size is looking far appealing. In addition I can get a 4K UltraHD tv around 1L if I go for a smaller size.

1. Samsung 40H7000
This is 40inches.
It's 4K resolution. It's not a 3d. Other features same as or better than the models posted above. It's new smarttouch remote is supposed to be far better for browsing.
Infibeam price Rs.77547.

2. LG 42UB820T
This is 42 inches
Resolution is 4K. Its not a 3d. Other features again same as or better than above models. Comes with a conventional remote, which can be fed to my programmable remote.
LG website mentioned MRP to be Rs. 87900.

Sigh...........

UHD or 4K as we know it IMO is still a distant reality for atleast a couple of years or more, there is not much 4k content available till date as the dth content offered is usually 480p unless it is an HD connection, heck even FHD is not easily available.so IMO 4K or UHD is just a marketing gimmick.insofar as the size of the tv is concerned i think it is a matter of personal opinion.

The benefit of 4K is that I'll be able to use it immediately to process my DSLR photos. A FullHD TV works very well for those 10MP photos. However 4K will make things easier.

I agree that 4K content is not available and is not likely to be available in next few years.
