Hi,

I considering buying one of the 2 and 1912 seems to have better review than 609. While 609 is being offered in India at about 48K, I am told Denon 1912 has not reached India.

I am not very interested in the networking ability of both the units ( may the Airplay of the 1912, which 609 does not have), since my Dune BD Prime 3.0 will handle it better - I don't think AV receiver are very good at networking

Any thoughts?

TIA,
MPM

Onkyo TX-NR609 is packed with features that is future proofed for atleast 3-4 years. I have played it for a couple of hours now.

1. Networking features may be unnecessary for some since most would only use it to update the firmware. I have found it useful particularly for listening to news and radio broadcasts over the internet (v.Tuner).

2. The front USB port can play lossless files (flac) and audio cd (wav) files straight from the thumb/handy/pen drive). Saves time in converting flac-wav and burning audio cds.

3. The Audyssey set up is not as accurate in measuring and calculating the listening positions as with the Yamaha. So you can fine-tune it manually.

Don't know if Denon 1912 offers same features as Onkyo. Audition and audition is the best way to go.

In my opinion these two should be neck to neck in comparison of features. But your ear should decide on which one to go for. These two brands definitely have different sound signature which some like over the other. So do a lot of hearing on both as much as you can using both your source discs and the sellers.

On paper Onkyo 609 is mighty full of features.Performance is good to(online rev).
Denon has HD flac codec so can decode BD rips, but doesnt have video upscaling.

Thanks for all the inputs. I have been offered 609 at Rs.48K but 1912 is not available in India yet.

I have heard that Onkyo normally run very hot, which could affect the reliability of the system but that is not the case with Denon. Can Onkyo owner comment?

TIA,
MPM

That's true with every other AVR. What I have heard about onkyo is that because of their transformer design the heat generation is a lot more than the other brands. That doesn't mean that it will have short lives. There are several people in this forum who have onkyo receivers running for years. Moreover what I have read in international forums about Onkyo this that because it is selling more the issues you hear is also probably more. Something like Maruti probably is the brand of car which meats an accident most often in India. But that's because they sell the largest numbers more than half of car sale in India. This doesn't mean that Maruti is making bad cars. It has drawbacks but for that matter every other has this or that bad.

Please don't read my post as "BUY ONKYO". I would suggest you to weigh more on features vs sound signature. You want have the feature packed Onkyo or "musically better" Denon. The issues - that can happen to any AVR you buy because it's a sensitive electronic equipment.

All the best!

well said.
Don't go by features only. Soundwise, I can't comment but I think they won't be TOO different.
What is more important is good build quality, less bugs and long life.

Most of Onkyo get hot after 20min of play.Denons are warm & ok for long run.
Recently I tested Yamaha 667 which was hardly warm(not Hot)after 2 hr of play.

Hi Friends,

Am new to Hi END Equipments, Can you pls help me to find difference between Onkyo SR 609 or NR 609, are these more or less same or some major difference?
I asked for NR 609, but right now available is SR 609! My Usage will be 80% movies and 20 Music!

Please Advice! Thanks in advance! :)

Since I own an Onkyo (608) It does get hot ( earlier I kept inside a box ) but never gave me any problem, Once I remember playing 15 hours at a stretch with no issues. Now after placing in an open table It just get warm, that's it.

SR = Standalone (standard) Receiver
NR = Network Receiver.

Thanks bphukon, dealers is quoting 42k after discount in Mumbai, should I negotiate hard or it's good price!

Thanks :)

i too had a dilemma with these two receivers.this is what i came to finally:if you want more features for your money go for onkyo.if you are more particular about the av receiver itself with it's build quality and so on, so to say a true receiver purist ;go for denon which wont compromise material quality for addl features.hence finally i shook off my fancy for marvellqdeo and went for denon!

Denon AVR 1912 doesnt have upsclaing feature the Denon Removed this in their New 1912 , it seems only the Higher End model is going to have the upscaling feature, If you need upscaling in the AVR then Denon 1912 is No No:indifferent14:

Thanks

These were prices in Bombay on a grp buy. The actual price shouldn't be more than this by 2-3 k. Negotiate more and ask for a better discount mate !

I too had to select between Onkyo 608 and Denon 1911.. Finally after reading all the comments from experts on Hifi and a very light audition.. I finally decided on Denon 1911. It is indeed a classic receiver.
Thanks to kittu and all the audiophile experts in this forum. You all are really patient and very helpful.

You are most welcome mands. Hey, some one was selling his klipsch sub in for sale section. Did u check?

Kittu, I didnt see that.. Will look out for that thread. If I dont get it, I have almost decided on Velodyne Impact 10. Thanks.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
