Hello

I am looking forward to purchase and almost decided on Panasonic ST 50

My Budget is 1 L 1.5 L

I am a novice in plasma world
I would like to know:

Most of the movies have letter box / black bars on top and bottom screen
will playing movie continuously all along
cause any image retention
or any other defects to the TV?

I mostly watch News channels
not continuously though
Will the news ticker on bottom screen also cause any kind of image retention?

I am planning to connect the TV to an 1.5VA APC UPS
Is it a good idea ? how long it may last on battery?

I m also planning to buy media player
I have heard of some dune hdi
is it very good? how much it will cost?

Also Is the VT50 available right now
I didn't see it in the showrooms i have visited?
If so what will be the best price for 55 inch version?

I am new born in plasma world
plz help me out in this dilemma

ST50...........excellent choice!!! one of the BEST tv's you can buy. VT50 not yet launched........and is the top end tv of the series. If you want to spend more then you can also look at GT50. Panasonic's 2012 line up goes like this :
X, XT, UT, ST, GT, VT.

Since your budget is up to 1.15L you can also look for 50GT50.

Your TV will have aspect ratio modifier which will help you to convert those black bars/letter box videos to full screen.

I've not seen much of SD in the first 100 hrs, but IMO there shouldn't be any IR. Just keep the settings at default factory values or lower for the first 100-150 hrs of usage and run the scroll bar in case you notice any temp. IR.

The UPS rating is 1.5kVA??

As Aakash said, ST50 is a good choice. GT50 is more advanced version. But if you are not a videophile and not too picky, GT50 will not give additional joy, except maybe some bragging rights. Please have a look at this post:

ST50 Owners' Thread - First impressions, Reviews, Tweaks, etc. - Post # 106
I have made a comparison of Panasonic's GT50, ST50, UT50 and XT50 models. I have excluded VT50 because it is still not launched and when it is launched it will be in 65" size only. The X50 has been excluded because XT50 and X50 are same except that XT50 is 3D enabled.

About IR: You have to be careful for the first 100 to 200 hours. During this time, the phosphors age properly and then there is slim chance of IR later. You should avoid "only letterbox" mode during this time. Read more about IR and you will get plenty of posts/info on how to avoid it.

Will the news ticker on bottom screen also cause any kind of image retention?
News ticker will not cause IR because it is continuously changing. But as stated above, be careful during the initial 100~200 hours. Avoid same channel all the time.

Not required. Plasma consumption depends upon size. A 50" is rated at around 400W (full white mode) and likely to consume around 250W. How long will it last on battery? No idea. Depends upon the battery, isn't it?

Dune HDI is good. There are owners here. They can tell. Another good option is WD media player.

VT50 will be launched in 65" only. It is not launched as yet because stocks of 65VT30 are still around. There is not much demand for a 300K monster. Plasma is not available in 55". The available sizes are 42", 50" and 65". Samsung plasmas are available in 43", 51" and 64". LG has them in 42", 50" and 60". Check websites. The Panasonic websites mentions 65ST50 also but there is no launch date. Price is unknown. I doubt whether you will get any 65" Panasonic in your price point.

If 55" is the size that interests you, LED has it for you.

Please read all the pros and cons about plasma. Compare them with LED. Make an informed decision. :)

Won't it distort the aspect ratio,
Is it OK to watch with black bars after the burn in period
With higher contrast
and settings

Yes its APC 1500 VA UPS

You can watch with black bars even before burn in, no issue with that. The TV comes with pixel orbiter which will keep shuffling the static logo. Keep the setting as ON/Auto and don't run in THX modes during initial hours as it will disable the pixel orbiter. If you watch SD content extensively then run the scroll bar once in a while, which will remove any sort of IR, if present.

1.5kVA inverter can easily drive your unit. Since battery rating is not known, I can't comment on the hours it can run on standby.

No. Don't watch with black bars before the proper burn in period is complete.

I will be using the TV mainly for HD Movie. Many of movies has black bars.

So the black bars with settings cranked up (after burn in period) is not a problem. Is there will be any risk if the TV plays a movie for 1-3 Hours continuously with black bars(after burn in period) wit high settings.

(I don't watch movie this continuously though)

You can definitely one watch a movies with letterbox bars on top - say 2~3 hours during break-in period. But continuous watching is not recommended during this phase.

After watching a movie, you can either run the break-in slides (from USB) or use the in built IR prevention features such as rolling bar (for 15 mins) to remove any signs of IR.

Anyway, my TV has done 90 hours and I have watched plenty of movies/TV (with letterbox) during this period. I did not have to run any IR prevention methods. There is no sign of IR. So I would like to say from personal experience that IR paranoia is highly overstated. I have taken the following care though:
  • set contrast of all pic setting to 35
  • avoided watching same channel continuously
  • set pixel orbiter to ON
  • gave the TV (and my eyes) a rest after watching a movie

Most 55" TVs are in the 1.4~1.5L bracket. They are all LED models.

I particularly liked the Sony 55HX850. It is a brilliant TV but it is 2L. You may look at the following:

- Sony 55HX750 (1.5+ L)
- Samsung UA55ES6200R (1.48L)

Not checked on LG and other brands.

I doubt contrast & shadow detail in this panel...

After reading lots of praises, I tested one of these at a Panasonic Brandshop... It did impress me, but no to the point making me buy it... I tried some chroma patterns from the lagom lcd test... this television did not pass the contrast & black level test

Contrast - Lagom LCD test

It was not able to differentiate between 1,2 & 3... They were all black...

Black level - Lagom LCD test

This disappointed me the most, it couldn't differentiate between the first 8 boxes... They all looked same black to me...

I tried all the modes normal, dynamic, cinema and true cinema. With every mode tried adjusting contrast, brightness, gamma. Didn't help...

Tried playing transformers & avatar Blu-Ray, blacks were ink deep, extremely deep to the point its missing some shadow details and that explains why this panel failed to pass the contrast & black level test

Is this how the panel really is, or am I missing something?

Dif you check the ambient lighting when you were around.

The TV settings need to be calibrated first. Have you done with those?

Those waiting for the VT50 can look for a grand deal on the VT30 at Diwali this year. Like the great deal on VT20 in 2011. 65" in what 1.3L
