Out of these two i would go for samsung as it has better image processing engine and it supports more formats out of the box.Even better i would go for samsung d490(entry level 3d plasma.) if my budget is 40K. prices you mentioned are on higher side, but may be kolkata is one of those places(like goa) where prices are higher as compare to other cities.
still these are the letsbuy.com figures. you should bargain, try to get prices as close to these as possible.
samsung-pn43d450
samsung-pn43d490
panasonic-thp42x30d

Further 5% discount coupons are available on the site as well.

Since I am also from Kolkata, I would suggest you should visit Raipur Electronics, Bhawanipore, little far from Homeland mall and HDFC bank (its situtated between these two). They quoted me 38000 for X30 which they told will be further reduced if you actually try to buy. Do quote 36K for X30, I think they would not disappoint you...

For Plasma, I would suggest Panasonic is anyday better than Samsung or others. Panny has excellent build quality plus superb picture performance, do not go by the statement "better image processing" which I really dont understand what they mean to..Panny is less prone to defects plus you are getting full 3Yrs warranty...Go for Panny...

Higher end plasma, Panasonic is like Usain Bolt :D. Others can not even come close. But for an entry level plasma, like x30 benchmarks are not so high. Sure you get 3 years warranty, But Samsung 450 or 490 does better job at image processing. No offence intended.
ps. That does not mean x30 is bad plasma.

thnx samy n vikram........well samy i hv heard that pana X30 can't play all video files.....is it true.....?? coz i'll b using my portable hdd for 720p HD movies.....and does pana and samsung hv much diff in pic quality.......?? also i was looking for finace option coz i dont hv that much of cash at the moment......does rajpur electronics give finance option......frm great eastern i am getting at 0% finance......

The X30 is being sold for 31k in ebay.in. If you find some coupons, it might go less than 30k.

That said, Samsung D450 is a better TV considering only PQ. It plays all video formats too additionally.

don't go for samsung. I heard lot of lttary pannal systim

It start creating problem as soon as the worronty period expires.

Go with paany.Worst by worst go for LG .But never go to samsung

Also i faced lot of trouble in servicing my products in nashik.Chk first reputeshan of your area service center

Raipur Electronics do have finance option available..but still price would be much lesser than other showrooms incld great eastern...

Regarding video playbacks, X30 can play MKV, MP4, WMV, MOV etc, it also can play movies through your extern HDD (max 1 TB), what else do you need? If you still find this is not sufficient then please check samsung plasmas..If you find its better then go for it..Samsung products are not bad either...

I would suggest go and visit Raipur electronics with your all video files in a HDD and if you like it bergain further to reduce the price..They are ready to sell in lower price..

thnx pal......all u mentioned abt X30 is sufficient for me.......and will surely go to raipur electronics and will compare both panny and samsung side by side.......my first preference will be panny having 3 yrs warranty........but if i notice any remarkable improvement in PQ in the samsung model then i wud go for samsung.....again thnx for the help samy......was really looking fr an expert from kolkata and u showed up.......:)

When buying a TV decision should be based on PQ more than file formats supported...
None of the lower end models will support all file formats...
I would suggest that you focus on getting TV with good PQ and then add a media player that will have better support for various file formats...

Bought a X30D last week. Very happy with the buy.

Have connected it on the network. Shoutcast works great. DLNA player also works great - I could stream on TV from my mobile.

Also, functions such as pixel oribiter will help avoid image retention. Can be used during burn-in and later as well.

I could not make out any issues with PQ - I played both 720p/1080i and SD from my media player and they looked great. Sound reproduction is as good as can be.

Have played it in both bright and dim conditions - with the right picture settings, the pictures were sharp. I have a cable set top box for TV - no issues with PQ on most channels.

Could play about 70% of the content I had without any issue.

1. I downloaded breakin images from this site, put it on a USB stick and played it every hour for the first 3 to 4 days.

http://www.eaprogramming.com/downloads/files/BreakIn_Images.zip

2. Also, the TV itself has a scroll bar which you can run across the screen in between watching content.

3. I have asked folks at home to keep changing aspect to run in maximum zoom mode from time to time - especially channels with bars.

4. Reduced contrast to less than 40, brightness lesser than 10.

This is based on what I could glean of this forum and the net. Hope it works for my sake !!
