My first question on this forum. I dont know where to ask this question, so please sort into the right place.

While going through US, UK, and Australia reviews, I have discovered that Panasonic models have different model names in these countries than the ones available here. So we cannot know whether what those reviews say applies to models available in our country. Why are the model names different? do the difference in the model names also mean a difference in quality? (third-rate product for a a third-world country)?

I don't think the whole Model names are different from UK/AUS models, only that they will differ in last single alphabet...for example X20B is UK model where we have X20D.
Most part of the reviews of UK/AUS models apply to Indian Models as well. But you must be careful with certain features where in Indian Models will be stripped down. That you can notice by checking Specs side by side.

I think the model names are quite different. Not sure but what I could match by looking at their specifications:
TH-P50U20D & TC-P50U2 (USA) are same, and
TH-P50V20D & TC-P50G20 (USA) are same.

well.we can blame our own sarkar and customs department for trying to make good things expensive for us.they are protecting the videocons of the world i guess

I am sorry but you are wrong about the customs duties being responsible for the outrageous prices charged by consumer electronics companies in India. Customs duties in India are quite reasonable now and they no longer play a significant role in determining pricing of consumer electronics in INdia.

customs duties from 16% onwards for electronics above 25k rs as far as i know.why would 16% be a insignificant amount?
what i mean is,if the customs duties were "reasonable" (though why any theft is reasonable is debatable),why shouldnt we be flooded with foreign goods?

How does 16% duty justify a price increase of almost 100% over prices for the same TVs in the US? I repeat, the exorbitant prices in India have little to do with customs duties.

If you look into this thread: ST50 Owners' Thread - First impressions, Reviews, Tweaks, etc., in the few early posts, I have compared the price in US and India. It is not significantly different.

Let me recapitulate.

1. The price you see in US websites is bare-bones price. The TV often does not include 3D glasses, wall mount, etc.
2. You have to do installation yourself. Now this is not a problem for pedestel/desktop stand but try wall mounting yourself?
3. Price does not include sales tax which is 7% on an average and as high as 8.25% in some cities in California.
4. Extended warranty is quite costly.

In the US, e-tailers such as Amazon, Overstock, Crutchfield, etc. are killing the brick and mortor stores. How does this affect us? In fact, we are getting goods cheaper. Right? But do consider. If there are no brick and mortor stores, how will you view and compare TVs? You will be restricted to web reviews alone. How can you judge the proper size you want? How will you really get the real feel of the TV? In India, we have started into e-commerce but fortunately or unfortunately, the price heavy items are still purchased from real stores. Dealer margins add to the cost.

One more aspect is that USA is cheapest when it comes to electronics. Try comparing prices of the same model between UK/Europe and India. You will find that the prices are not so significantly different.

Finally, let us face it. Customs duty is meant to keep the foreign trade balance skewing towards an import economy (corruption is another story). Customs duty is not the only factor. There are other taxes such as Excise, Spl. Excise, VAT, Freight, Octroi. Some of these are taxes on taxes.

I am not justifying. I would love if goods are cheaper out here too.

Going Political

Yes Yes Yes,

Great leaders of today have to look after own generations for about few hundreds years,
Their relatives for few generations,

Their hangerons for 2 generations

Their party for next elections

So they say the britishers have looted India, so the country is down,,

So Methinks: That reason has become very old, Others are much ahead and

still going ahead, we r stuck up with great leaders .

Keep paying all the taxes so that great leaders can splurge in their schemes

without any accountability.

So moot point is keep paying for the inefficiencies of these great leaders.
