Negating a recent Supreme court order, Rajya Sabha approves a bill that maintains the right of politicians in prison to contest in polls.

Amazing. Kudos to the government.

It is not as bad as we perceive it. There is a difference between arrested and convicted. Were it not for this bill, i (instigated by another politician) can file some random case against a politician in my neighborhood during election time and prevent him from contesting. Here the policeman has the arbitrary power to decide who will contest and who will not.
People participating in every movement would have cases slapped against them. For example almost all farmer leaders in Karnataka have had cases slapped against them (cases like unlawful assembly and such). So in theory those with money and muscle power can prevent these guys from contesting just by getting the police to revisit the case and arrest the person. Just an example.
It is true that this can result in some misuse but it is in the right direction IMHO. But those convicted of serious offences (supreme court has said 2 yrs and above jail term) should not be allowed to contest - that is for sure and nobody should have any difference of opinion here.

So does the law now permit those who are convicted also to contest in polls?

@elangoas... I have mentioned the same that the bill is to 'maintain' existing rights.

Govt plans to give 2.5 crore mobile phones, 90 lakh tablets free - The Times of India
Strange ! Can not give water, roads, electricity, which are tax payers rights.

This is OT, but Govt will spend 7,860 crores for this?

@ say Rs.1000 per mobile, 2.5 crore handsets would be Rs. 2500 crores
@ say Rs. 3000 per tablet, .9 crore units would cost Rs. 2700 crores
Total is Rs. 5200 crores. Where does the remain Rs. 2660 crores go??
It looks like these days scams are inbuilt at the budget allocation stage itself.

It is really bad as the goons who are arrested for kindnapping, rape, murder, etc will be freely allowed to contest Polls from inside the prison. Think Mumbai/Delhi rape convicts contesting polls in Mumbai/Delhi.

People who are arrested for minor offences do get bail and are not held in prison for long time that could affect their ability to contest elections. This is real sad news for this country but what are we doing...we are either supporting or criticizing this decision simply on internet....It time to stop talking and taking action...:mad::mad::mad::mad:
