Hi All,

Now the new doubt has been raised on me regarding home theater. As you see my preview post, I have a philips speaker system with 96W RMS power (13.5*5+28.5 W RMS) with 4 ohms.

Now I am planning to buy a Yamaha receiver for my home sound system. So I just want to know the speakers which I am already having will be compatible to Yamaha 373 or to any other receiver?

To My knowledge it can't...But thought to get guidance from experts....

Thanks

Actually this is a multimedia speaker system where it have all the options right from TV input to USB input...

The power from Yamaha receiver seems to be 100 W RMS but this has only capable of 13.5 RMS....

Attached is the image of the speaker that I have....

Will the sound output good if I use this?

To be frank, I can't afford much money in AVR+Speaker separately..If the sound will be good, I will go with the AVR using this speaker, otherwise I will go with Yamaha YHT196 or 296..

Need your opinion...

Tell me something, is there any particular reason you're looking at a 5.1?

Are you open to 2 channel? Because a Cambridge Audio S30 bookshelf pair on a topping tp20 (total of 15k INR) will knock the socks off that Philips in sound quality..

Thanks corElement. But I am looking for 5.1 only, to get a surround effect...

Asal,

Its good that you read to spend around 20k for surround sound. I bet you even a entry level Stereo would throw the 30k HTIB away with its performance.
The only thing i can say is HITB doesnt have much resale value and you would be feel "Not enough" after few months+cannot be upgraded+cannot be sold separate etc

I would personally suggest 3.1 Setup, Centre+stereo speakers, Placing the stereo speakers as rear, am sure it will never miss to impress you on surround.More over the resale value is good for these items+ can upgrade easly which is not possible in HTIB

If you really like a 5.1 go ahead, But i was like you until i saw a film in quality stereo set up and placement.

I still owning a Yamaha DSP CENTRE+TWO SURROUND or Stereo output, i used in small room, but lot my friends has been amazed on films and said its performing more than their HTIB's

Am in Bangalore, else would have given a treat to your movie experience in my small stereo setup , which i had in chennai:sad:

All the best and make sure the money is spent for passion apart from value.

3 Qs
Are you suggesting only the centre in the front and bookshelves on the rear?
How will you get 3.1 (4 channels) without an AVR?
Centre + stereo makes 3.0 not 3.1:sad:

Thank you very much, Audio Freek.

I agree with you that stereo speakers will give a surround effect since most of the audio and video ( downloading from internet) has only 2.0 or 2.1 channels. Actually I had the same kind of set up 2 yrs back when I was having a normal old CRT TV with Solidaire amplifier which is too old than the TV.

Now I have bought a LED TV which is capable of delivering 5.1 channels thats where my liking went towards 5.1 channels.

Just I need one more advise from you. Is choosing onkyo S3400 a good choice? I have heard from many experts that it is good for movies more than a music. Whats your opinion?

Santy,

Yes center+rear would make only 3.0,Just forgot to mention it as 3.0:o

Po-logic functionality set up has Center and rear(2) But i think its available in only Pre owned market.

There is no issues with Onkyo HT :), for sure its going to amaze you with its surround sound.

HT is best for Movie and not music. Frankly speaking, if you prefer major on movie, then go ahead with Onkyo:)

The reason am asking you to start with Stereo set-up and upgrade is because

1.Now you are owning a Philips HT and are you comfort in upgrading the same to 5.1? No right
In same case if you have some Stereo amp+ speakers, Simply can use those speakers for front and can invest on Pre-Owner AVR+CENTER+rear for completing your HT

In simple terms, Our tastes, likes keep changing, so its better to choose a customized set-up instead of HT package,Which will impress for some time and later (say after few ears) you will be in same condition and searching for new set-up:)

Its about your mindset and interest at end of day.

If you feel that HT is for Movies and dont make delay in purchasing Onkyo HT Enjoy the same

Guys let us keep it straight, without any frills, so that newbies don't get confused.

2.0 ie Stereo = MUSIC
5.1 or 7.1 ie Surround = MOVIES

Bingo! No confusion. Great Combination :ohyeah:

2.0 or 2.1 or 3.0 or whatever is just a BIGGGGG compromise for MOVIES. Accept it.
Yes you can enjoy your movie still, no doubt. That's because you like to watch movies and that movie is good.
But nothing can replace the 5.1 or 7.1 experience for movies.

So there we go.

@asaldharan, your questions are:
Whats your requirement, Movies: Music ratio?
Whats your budget?
For movies, do you want surround sound experience right out of the box or are you willing to build a system one component at a time such that you arrive at a decent Home theatre over a period of time?

If you are not clear, I would explain

AVR and Front Two speakers
Then centre
Then sub
Then surrounds
... is one of the ways of building a custom HT by choosing the components individually.

So decide and let us know what you are looking for?

ps: please sell (throw) your Philips speakers OK?

Santy - My preference 50:50. I am not looking for AVR and speaker separately. I know its sounds good (since in my most of the posts experts told that) but I can't afford that much money.

My budget is 30K max. So far I decided to go for Onkyo S3400 but If any AVR+Speaker falls in to this budget, I dont mind to choose that ( Know thats not possible).

Also interested in Yamaha but it falls out from my budget except YHT 196.

It would be a tough call then, if you listen to music 50% of the time.

Onkyo 3400 certainly fits your budget but you will not be very pleased for music.
